Rape in America is the highest unreported crime because it is believed that it is too personal to report or that the victim fears the assailant might return and extract revenge....No such a problems in Australia and out of 123 countries listed as the highest accounts of rape, Australia is a lowly 121 on that list...America is at 58, so though we have a way to go our incidents of rape are being decling without the need for guns thank you very much.

But that's not what you utter in your follow-on comment:

The citizen in the U.S. is the first line of defense. The cops are essentially reporters with badges, who show up long after the assault.

No doubt there's a few people out there that could be classed as idiots that do own guns & don't need them.
There's also idiots out there that own guns & do need them, occupations etc..
The number of idiots in Australia who don't own a gun far outnumber the number of people who own guns but don't need them.

As before: The police are nothing more than reporters with badges who show up after the fact of violence. In the U.S., the citizen is largely responsible for his own defense against violent attacks upon himself, because the police cannot be everywhere.
