Cuban Schools Slap Down Jehovah's Witnesses

Refusal to conform with state ideology exposes faith group members to discrimination.

A member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Cuba filed a complaint with the state prosecutor last month alleging discrimination against her three school-age daughters.

She says the authorities have condoned acts of discrimination including physical and verbal violence, which have led the pupils to miss classes and their parents to move house.

“I demand a solution, because they are responsible for safeguarding young people on the island,” said the woman, known by the pseudonym Ana to protect her family’s identity.“I’m tired of the poor treatment they [my daughters] receive, and of the fact that no one is doing anything about it.”

Her appeal to the prosecutor general follows unsuccessful applications to other state institutions. Cuba has no judicial mechanism for dealing with complaints about breaches of religious freedom.

Ana explained that because of the values held by Jehovah’s Witnesses,“The girls do not wear school uniforms as the religion prohibits this. They don’t sing the national anthem or pay tribute to national symbols, either.”

The trouble began in Bayamo, a town in the eastern Granma province, where the children got into trouble for not taking part in the political activities that are a feature of school life in Cuba. This was noted in one of the girls’ reports as the reason why she had failed fifth grade.

“The individual in charge of religious affairs for the province warned me that if the children didn’t attend political activities, they would fail the year,” Ana said.

For the school year starting 2011, the family moved back to the capital Havana. The girl who had failed fifth grade was allowed to attend classes again, but according to Ana,“the problems continued”.

Another of her daughters told her that the teacher had slapped her on the head. The parents reported this to the police, but the case was shelved.

Ana says the school itself took no action, and the girls continue to be mistreated by teachers and bullied by their peers.

All three girls are upset and invent illnesses to avoid having to go to school. Ana says they have not been to school for nearly two months.

The Cuban government does not recognise the Jehovah’s Witnesses as a legitimate faith group. since 1974. In their latest yearbook, the Jehovah’s Witnesses say there are 1,400 congregations in Cuba, and over 95,00 “publishers”, the term used for active members.

The state education system is heavily politicised, and the current school regulations require all pupils to be “willing to defend the socialist homeland”. That is something Jehovah’s Witnesses cannot do, as they are conscientious objectors.

Jesus says " he is called us out of the world to be no part of the world'

God says it is the Fathers who are to bring up their children in the mental regulation of Jehovah

Since when do Fathers give their rights over to the state???

For the state to bring the child up in the mental regulation of the world??

Their are too many false witnesses of Jehovah ..

From the article: "Cuba has no judicial mechanism for dealing with complaints about breaches of religious freedom."

Such is the way of dictatorships. JWs are one of many groups this country has persecuted. Hopefully one day, those old fascists will be dead and younger, democratic minded people step up for their people.

Some people need to read up on how Cuba oppresses religious freedom including mainstream religions like Catholicism. This situation has nothing to do with the mother's wishes and whether you think they are valid.
It has everything to do with an oppressive government that has for decades persecuted its own people.

Cuba is an island prison run by a selfish and self serving murderer and ruthless communist dictator. No such thing as religious freedom. No freedom to worship. No constructive engagement is tolerated by the dictatorship. It is a dictatorship. It's their way and no other. Only their puppets and marionettes are tolerated.

I wondered about this too, but here is something that explains it:

"Cuban School Uniforms

Figure 1.--Cuban school children wear white shirts and redish maroon pants or suspender skirts. The yonger boys wear shorts and the older boys longs. The younger children also wear blue scarves. I'm not sure how they qualify for the red scarves.

Cuban school children wear red pants or suspender skirts. Many of the younger elementary children wear short pants. I don't know if this was a requirement, but most of the younger boys wear shorts.

>>>The children wear white shirts with blue and red Young Pioneer kerchiefs. The two colors signify different stages of participation in the Communist Party youth group. <<<Once the boys earn their red scarves, more and more wear long pants. "

While there would be no objection to wearing a school uniform, no true Christian would wear something that indicated participation in any political party, as that would be a violation of Jesus' command that Christians are to be "no part of the world."

(John 17:14-16)

14 I have given your word to them, but the world has hated them, because they are no part of the world, just as I am no part of the world.

15 “I request you, not to take them out of the world, but to watch over them because of the wicked one.

16 They are no part of the world, just as I am no part of the world.

So you believe that followers of Jesus Christ should wear clothing that shows they uphold the Communist party? We disagree.

Why are you disagreeing when Watchtower Society leaders affiliated themselves with a worldly confederacy against Jehovah God and his dedicated Witnesses on earth (w87 9/1 p. 20 par. 13) and agreed to uphold its ideals?
