BHP cuts 300 jobs as Qld coal mine shuts

NEARLY 300 coal miners have lost their jobs after BHP Billiton announced it would stop production at its Queensland Gregory open-cut mine.

You old goat. The Mining companies in this country pay royalities to the states Governments where the minerals are mined. Under the Australian Constitution these minerals are the property of the States, however the Federal Labor Grub Government has imposed a Commonwealth mining Tax on all miners, in other words they are to be double taxed. The matter is coming before the high court soon so States and Feds can get it all ironed out as to who is intitled to tax the miners. The Big miners like BHP, Rio Tinto, Xstrata are winding back operations, as are smaller miners. It costs the big miners $55 a ton to just get this stuff out of the ground, and the smaller miner $75 a ton thats without getting to the ship for export. With the Fed Gov mining tax the miners figure they are better off shore in Africa etc. The smaller miners are dead and buried. Most of the big mines are in Western Australia and Queensland, and both have conservative Governments.

Yea everyone in South Australia pisses there money up against the wall, Like all die hard Labor States u will always be broke perhaps thats one reason why BHP stopped the 30 Bil Olympic Dam project in you State, miners always pissed at start of work plus mining taxes.
