I am Bulgarian born, raised and educated in Bulgaria, but I live in Canada. I don't understand why you are so upset about Jones' article. He was honest about what he saw, and what he saw now in Bulgaria was not far from the truth. I am very disappointed from what I saw in Bulgaria during my last trip there. I have nostalgia for the old country the way I remember it...I don't like what I see now...I am from Sofia, but I can't stand it now...It is so polluted and has so many problems...Okay I will say it I am ashamed...so much that it hurts. What happened to Bulgaria??? I CAN'T recognize it anymore...Only the country side (and only some areas) are still good and remind me of my childhood and all the things I learned about the historical past of Bulgaria and why I should be proud of being Bulgarian.

Slovakia routs Bulgaria 82-0 in women's hockey
With more goals than minutes in the game, Slovakia's women's ice hockey team claimed an amazing 82-0 victory over Bulgaria in Olympic qualifying.
Slovakia outshot the Bulgarians 139-0 during the 60-minute game, played in Latvia. The margin of victory is a record for a women's International Ice Hockey Federation-sanctioned event.
"We took it as training," Slovakia coach Miroslav Karafiat said after Saturday's game.
Slovakia, which also beat Croatia, Latvia and Italy, advanced to another qualifying group with Germany, Kazakhstan and France. The winner will secure a spot at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
Bulgaria was eliminated after scoring one goal and giving up conceding 192 in the tournament.
The Slovakian men's team clinched its biggest ever victory against the Bulgarians 14 years ago when they won 20-0.
As I said many times before, those Bulgars should stick to growing paprikas only !
It must be worth to visit Bulgaria just to see Bulgars playing hockey ?

The 4-th official language the Bible was translated and preached was Bulgarian .
The Bulgarian Church was recognized by Catholics and Greek Orthodox .
Before that was only three official languages ( Hebrew , Greek and Roman )

Yes, they were, until Bulgarians there discovered plastic bottles and bags. Now, you drive through remote river gorges and see a wall of plastic, covering trees, rocks, bushes etc. Outside of the large cities and towns, there is no garbage collection and people throw things into gorges, or into piles in the middle of nowhere, just as they always have, except now nothing they throw away biodegrades, and the first rain sweeps it into the rivers and streams.
I have been coming to Bulgaria for more than a decade. I have lived there twice. My wife is Bulgarian. I love Bulgaria. But all you apologists for Bulgaria, you know deep down that Bulgaria is in bad shape. In my opinion it is getting worse, not better. While some people might have more material things (though oddly no discernible jobs), there is a noticeable degradation of the popular culture, political culture, and it is now more dangerous even than the early/mid 90s, when criminal gangs were running around fueled by the Bosnian war. Remember VIS?
The roads are abysmal, traffic accidents left and right. The seaside has been overbuilt. The nature preserves are being overrun with illegal construction. It's the first country to be cut off of EU funding for gross corruption. So don't try to make Bulgaria out to be a paradise. It's not. Look at my IP location. That's paradise.
