He was arrested and covicted of people smuggling....How many thirteen year old kids are people smugglers do you think? probably a lot more now since this kid got free..next all the smugglers will be under eighteen...and then what?....
He should have been moved from the prison to serve the rest of his time in a juvenile facility(he wasn't inocent)...he shouldn't go free....Now we should feel sad that the kid who when they had no way of determining his age and was thrown in jail with the big guns after committing a major offence should have been away for his mummy and family for so long, ohhhhhh how sweet....maybe next time they should just shoot them and throw their bodies overboard...

Does seem strange, shouldn't he have been placed in juvenile detention?

By rights yes....but because the government was supposed to have made a mistake in putting him in the hard core prison when he was only thirteen(they didn't know his accurate age there) then the courts probably thought he had paid the price....and it send a strong message to the government officials that erred....For my part, because he couldn't declare his age before he went to court it served him right and he should have rotted there...because without his papers "HIS" intent was to decieve the Australian officials into letting him go(because of his age) once he had delivered his cargo and it took a long time but his (and that of those who sent him) stategy worked....didn't it? and he virtually got away with it?...

13 it too young imo and it's not uncommon for children to be used in these criminal activities as they don't know the risks or consequences ahead of them.

He's Muslim, right? Girls of his age in Muslim countries are routinely married off to old men. Mohammed in fact took a 9 year old wife.

Girls and boys. In the end it's always the children who pay the price. I think there's a lot to be said about extreme religious indoctrination. But imo religious indoctrination is bad enough.

The papers which established the boy's age were sent over in 2010, before the age-determining hearing, but they were not accepted as valid - the boy did not know he was to be involved in people smuggling, he believed he was going on a fishing expedition - he was only 13 years old at the time, he is still a minor now after serving three years in prison with adult offenders - I think it is very sad.

Thank you for that Sairla....It appears that the birth certificate that was not shown in the boys evidence because it was written only three years before he was detained in so the AFP doubted the authenticity of the information....also the boy was one of the crew on the people smuggling boat....not as you have said...that he was on a fishing expedition....

Please spare us the bleeding heart story where this kid is concerned, he would of known exactly wnat he was doing rest assurred of that, these Indonesians are sly cunning little bastards, so, take off your rose coloured glasses and live in the real world, and yes, maybe they should be shot and thrown overboard, that way the message may, just may, get out?

He's a kid, at his age he should be playing with swings and pokemon rather than being placed in with adult prisoners. If he is raped or assaulted get ready for a million dollar lawsuit.

If that happens, then Pixie Rudd or Juliar should pay the damages out of their wealthy pockets and not the taxpayers as they are responsible for dismantling our border protection and both should be hung and quartered for it.

Abbott would get the navy to turn the boats around and let them sink.

I said that he believed he was on a fishing expedition - another villager arranged the trip and asked the boy, Ali Jasmin if he would like to go - Ali agreed believing he would have a chance to make more money fishing - he was supporting his mother and sisters after the death of his father.

Curious why the Indonesian government hasn't made any noise?

That's right Elias, however that poor boy was actually supporting his family after his father died - even the Immigration Officers who interviewed him believed him to be no older than 14 years - apparently there have been people in the prison who have taken care of him - I feel for his mother who has not been able to see her boy in all this time - some things happen that are very, very wrong and this is one of them.
