At the time of Constantine, Christianity (though it had no name) was basically a cult.
Rome was multi faith and multi God, and all regions that came under Roman rule had their own belief systems.
But Rome could see the rise in followers of Christ's Cult and so attempted to cement Romes power by adopting Christianity as its Primary faith in 3rd Century AD.
So even though the Roman empire was on its last legs - the Roman Catholic church went on to rule for another 1500 years
