I'm a patriotic Irishman with hopes of going to Sandhurst and joining the Royal Irish Regiment (RIR) of the British Army. I see no problem with a citizen of a mature, independant democracy joining the armed forces of another country. I imagine there may be some who would disagree. I tend to vote Sinn Féin, and I support Irish unity, but I have few problems reconciling that with membership of the RIR. I'd like to know this community's thoughts on the matter.
Also, does anyone have any friends or relatives from the Republic who joined the Brits?

Grow up. You shouldn't be living so far in the past as to not accept progress, and hold old grudges. And no, I won't be living my life in fear thereafter, because thankfully, the majority of people in the country have worked past your archaic attitudes.

And seriously, punctuation and proper spelling wouldn't kill you.

"Hung"? Well at least you're not overreacting.

You appear to adhere very well to the "Up the Rah, Fuck the Brits!" stereotype. It seems you don't have much respect for anything but your own take on the situation, which I'm guessing is the one you were born into, no? So not only are you right, but everyone who disagrees with you should die? Who's really the stupid one here?
It's people like yourself and the RIRA who should be locked up.
"Traitor" implies that I have betrayed a cause. I never subscribed to militant nationalism or thuggery. And joining the Brits is hardly incompatible with desiring Irish unity and independance. Once upon a time maybe, but not these days. So I wouldn't say I have betrayed anything. Extremists lke yourself however, have done plenty to destroy peaceful progress and ruin the credibility of Irish nationalism,(Omagh, Massarene). Essentially, such actions are self-defeating and achieve no progress. They hinder the movement. You are betraying us.
What does the word "hypocrite/fanatic/bigot " mean?

Go and join the RIR, they, like all other British army units served with distinction in Iraq and Afghanistan and taught our ( US ) army a trick or two based on their experiences in Northern Ireland.
It seems you got the rath od some assholes here in America who have a teart eyed idea that the filthy PIRA where not terrorists in the same league as AQ / Taliban, etc. Ignore their ignorant crap and join the British army, it has always had Irishmen serve with distinction and honour.

Well said. I'm a nationalist but I'm not exactly a huge supporter of the Provos. I think at this point the British Army is seeming like just as good an option as my national defence forces if not better. My respects to the US by the way.

Umm, what? I presume "THE BOYS" are, what, wannabe IRA? Radical IRA? Remnants of the IRA? Bunch of losers in a ghetto carrying on "The Struggle"? Something like that?

Also, you spelt "Afghans" wrongly.+1 grammar point for you.

Daily Horoscope for January 3

Taurus

The steadier you are now, the better: this is not the time to throw caution to the wind and be exceptionally attentive to details. If anything, labour the point and you'll find in a few days' time that you are really glad you did. Friends will be able to give your morale a big boost at the moment, if you're in need of support. Team relationships and efforts work tremendously well at the moment. Why fly solo if you don't need to?
