BELGRADE -- Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leader Čedomir Jovanović thinks that Serbia should join NATO as soon as possible because it would be a shortcut to the EU.

He pointed out that it would also guarantee country’s territorial integrity.

He added that he did not idealize EU or NATO but that the government needed to conduct a policy in accordance with Serbia’s needs.

Commenting on the protest announced by the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), Jovanović said that this was the only thing DSS leader Vojislav Koštunica could do.

He once again called on the ruling coalition to remove United Regions of Serbia (URS) proposal regarding changes to the law on financing of local self-governments from the parliament's agenda. The LDP leader claims that it would cause a deficit worth RSD 43bn in the state budget.

He believes that the URS' proposal is scandalous and that the ruling coalition “is paying for (URS leader Mlađan) Dinkić's loyalty“ by allowing a debate about the proposed changes and points out that the Democratic Party (DS) bears the crucial responsibility.

“Such decentralization is too steep price for Dinkić's political survival just because they depend on his ability to blackmail them with MPs, without which they don't have majority in parliament,“ the LDP leader stressed, adding that this was not Dinkić's but Serbian President Boris Tadić's fault.

According to Jovanović, the LDP insists on “stopping“ of Dinkić's project and launching of constitutional reforms which would determine the character of local self-governments and Serbian municipalities' rights and obligations.
