Taiwan cannot accept 'Chinese' identity

Full story: www.etaiwannews.com

The just concluded "Cross-Strait Economic and Cultural Forum" convened by the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese Nationalist Party fully confirmed expectations that the fete between the reconciled ruling parties of Taiwan and the People's Republic of China would announce a new agenda toward top-down "cultural unification" under the banner of ...

You need an education yourself. Your government tells you so much lies, you couldn't differentiate a duck from a chicken.

ROC constitution was drawn up during 1910s which included Tibet, China mainland, Taiwan and etc. When did PRC government started? 1950s. PRC didn't even want to associated with seperatists (KMT) during that period who fled the mainland and claimed Formosa to itself. And now PRC wants to reunite because Taiwan is a strategic island? It's a load of bulla! Or maybe China wants to be governed under Taiwan instead if you recognise the ROC constution.

If they want to reunite so badly, KMT can go back to China and really form a democratic nation in China instead of just one party democracy!! China is a big joke itself in terms of government/politics. A bunch of amateurs trying to be the emperor.

I say "Leave Taiwan Alone."

So let them not accept themselve being Mainland. Because in reality they are not part of the mainland. But Taiwanese know their ancestry/tribe. Ask them and you might get to know where their from. A lot of them say they are Fukian. A Chinese Tribe.

Reality Check Joe!

You think HK is happy is because your government tell you so. If you been to HK before 1997 and now, you would say there isn't any improvements to human rights, economies, democracy and quality of life other than more skyscrapers.

Check again! China can only use the wealth/money that Taiwan and western nations give to cover up and glorify its government's incompetency.

Check again! Chinese have been fighting among themselves since history could remember.

Check again! Taiwanese is peace loving people and we do not fight with anyone, not even China.

Check again! It is China who is aiming missles at Taiwan.

Check again! Taiwanese and Chinese are not brothers and sisters.

I reiterate my 1st post:
Race does not equate to Nationality.
Taiwanese is not Chinese.
Chinese is not Taiwanese.
Mongolian is not Chinese.
Tibetan is not Chinese.
Singaporean is not Chinese.
China must stop assimilating other minorities.

Substitue parental prerogative for sibling squabbles for a fairer representation of how line of relationship is drawn inside this big China family. The latter if allowed at all is negligible against the all imposing will of Patriarch China.

Contrast sisters Hong Kong and Macao. A noisesome or some may say rebellious bent has cost the former in standing somewhat. There's Shanghai being actively groomed to eclipse or perhaps altogether replace Hong Kong in its vital functions. A none too subtle manoeuver by a displeased parents perhaps. Meanwhile to reinforce the lesson the quieter half sister across the Pearl River delta has received a present of an island territory for education and tourism development.

Some development I am sure will vex the thought process of the Taiwanese in the years ahead.

You are strange. Why not read the history and visit Taiwan? Why not see who are the ones who refuse to admit they are of Chinese ancestry (and what is the %). There is no need to debate with you.

That shows you don't understand the sentiment of many people of Chinese ancestry. You are layman to the subject. "Taiwanese", "Red Chinese" etc. are terminologies used by foreigners and laymen in the subject. We don't talk like that among us although there is a gap in thinking across the Strait.

The only people, who should be deciding it Taiwan becomes part of China are the Taiwanese.

A recent Zogby poll shows a majority of 85% are adamantly opposed to the idea, and want independence and admission to the UN.

Ma Ying Jeou seems to be doing all he can to make it easier for Taiwan to fall forever into orbit around China by increasing economic ties. It may be a pragmatic solution to the problems of the global financial crisis , but he's playing a dangerous game. Ma could be handing over the keys to the kingdom - and Taiwanese sovereignty with it.

Even, so - there's no inevitability here. The real choice lays with the Taiwanese people, and the next election could change everything.

Um...no. Taiwanese of Han ancestry do call themselves Chinese among themselves. They call themselves Taiwanese when talking to mainland people and foreigners. And they absolutely see themselves as different from mainland Chinese.

One can say the same for HKer. But the root of the matter does not lies in what people on the island think, but the legal ownership of the territory itself.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the root of the matter is about who has the will and the means. As long as the majority of Taiwanese do not want unification, they will not unify. Its that simple.

They will go to war of this too, as would China. They could go to war over this knowing that they would lose (although, I'm not 100% sure Taiwan would lose).

The only way Taiwanese would want to unify with China is if China becomes more like Taiwan. Meaning: democracy; strong protection of individual rights; ownership of land; free media, etc

You are ignorant. Told you million times, chinese ancestry not equal to nationality...

If you really insist, claim singapore as part of China first. I know they always call themselves "Chinese" and the singapore goverment is pro-communist too! It would be alot easier. You can then stretch and claim your border all the way to SEA.
