For energy security, Japan urged to diversify sources
Japan needs not only to maintain a diverse energy mix - including nuclear power - but also diversify the ways of securing imported fuel in the face of the changing global supply-demand structure, a former executive director of the International Energy Agency said at a recent seminar in Tokyo.

All of the above is the answer to power demands. No single source should have a crippling monopoly in ANY country.
Still wish Japan would lead in Solar Power Satellites. They have the need and it wouldn't be beyond their resources to build a 'big dumb booster' for heavy lifting.
But also they can lead in energy efficiency. That is probably the short term answer for Japan at least.

You have to modify your post: Energy efficiency is always the driver. Now and later.
Also: Solar satellites are not the answer for anybody. Especially, no 'big dumb booster!'

Wind Energy is the solution maybe.
