Tom Mulcair ambiguous if he will appoint NDP senators if party wins next election

Mar 5, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: National Post

After days of pummelling Prime Minister Stephen Harper over appointing senators who are now the targets of a spending investigation, the leader of the official Opposition - whose party favours abolition of the red chamber - won't say whether he will appoint senators if the NDP forms the next government.

Mulcair; you have had over two years opposition against harper, yet I see not one credible accounting of it.

The word should be "nominate", not "appoint"! As I remember it, the prime ministers do not have the power to appoint senators. HOWEVER the Governor General(GG), who appoints the senators, by tradition usually does whatever the prime minister of the day wants him to do and appoints senators that were nominated by the prime minister.- A fine distinction! My guess is that the GG could also, perhaps, appoint senators that were nominated by a premier, or a Lieutenant governor, of a province, but it hasn't been done as far as I know!
