Russian Ambassador in Cairo: Repeating Foreign Military Intervention in the Region's Affairs Is Red Line for Russia

Feb 23, 2012

CAIRO,(SANA)- Russia's Ambassador to Egypt Serge Kerbetchenko said that repeating foreign military intervention, individually or collectively, in the region's affairs is a red line for Russia.

"It is wrong to consider that what happened and is happening in Libya 'a perfect solution'," said Kerbetchenko in an interview with al-Ahram al-Arabi magazine, adding that Russia is working to evade a repeat of the Libyan scenario in Syria.

He stressed that the bases for the solution to the Syrian crisis are political ones that start with an immediate cease-fire from whatever source, embarking on national dialogue and implementing big political reforms with the participation of all.

"The preconceptions made by some about weakening and then breaking the regime in Syria as the solution to all the problems in Syria are mistaken," said the Russian Ambassador in Cairo, warning that this might open the door to a big abyss.

He reaffirmed that Russia's stance inside and outside the Security Council stems from firm convictions that are based on the necessity of evading a civil conflict, working to help Syria overcome the tragic ordeal it is going through and not supporting one party over the other.

The Russian diplomat called on the Arab League to be more realistic about the Syrian crisis and come to its senses, stressing that his country is dealing with the Arab League's role and not with Qatar.
