A deep conviction of former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar was Sri Lanka’s problem had to be resolved within the shores of this island, External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said yesterday.
“Kadirgamar believed that it was simply not possible to arrive at a sustainable agreement evolved overseas and a solution should be evolved keeping with the traditions and customs of the land and should have a home grown and home spun quality.”
“He believed Tamils have lived in other parts with other communities in amity as they have done for centuries, respecting each others’ culture. And this is the proud history which we are heirs. Kadirgamar’s thinking was very strongly influenced by the awareness of that noble and salutary tradition,” Minister Peiris said addressing an event to mark Minister Kadirgamar’s eighth death anniversary.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa unveiled Minister Kadirgamar’s statue at the Institute for International Relations and Strategic studies named after Kadirgamar.
The efforts of Kadirgamar exposed the LTTE terrorists for what they really are and caused the outfit to stand condemned in the court of world opinion, Prof. Peiris said.
“Kadirgamar had many achievements to his credit. His was in every sense of the word a multi-faceted career. But what he is remembered today is his singular achievement in turning round world opinion at a critical juncture in the contemporary history of our country,”
Minister Peiris said:“Today, the terrorist organisation which arrested Sri Lanka’s social and economic development for three decades has been banned by no fewer than 34 countries. But this is something which could not have taken for granted at the time Kadirgamar began his work”.
Prof. Peiris said the magnitude of Kadirgamar’s achievement therefore has to be assessed in the context of the conditions which prevailed at that time where the terrorist organisation was endeavouring to create the impression in the world community that they were not terrorists but freedom fighters.

“Kadirgamar refuted that contention with all the persuasive power at his command and in a variety of ways. He convinced the world there could not be an isolationist approach to terrorism. These are interlocking, intertwining relationships and Kadirgamar succeeded in making this point with great conviction and emphasis that developments in this country is by no means irrelevant,” he said. Minister Peiris said Kadirgamar had done this with great acumen and added that one of the strategies he employed for this was to link the circumstances in Sri Lanka to situations in which there was sharp focus at international level.
As an example, the minister pointed out that Kadirgamar had been able to divert world attention to the plight of child soldiers recruited by the LTTE while linking with the work carried out by Graca Machel, wife of Nelson Mandela on the above subject within the UN system at the time.
The minister also noted that his efforts had paved way in banning the LTTE in the US and later in the UK where Kadirgamar had played a significant role in convincing British authorities at a time when there was a debate on whether such a ban was possible in terms of the applicable laws in the UK. The European Union had followed suit banning the outfit within all its 27 member nations, he added.
“Banning of this terrorist organisation all over the world is the most prominent achievement of Kadirgamar that is remembered today with gratitude and appreciation,” he added.
The minister said Kadirgamar was a person who was firmly committed to a unitary state, a state within which all communities would be able to live in harmony and in unison.
Kadirgamar had also realised that whatever solution was evolved to the national question, it should take into account the reality that the Tamil community was not exclusively resident in the northern and eastern provinces of the island, the minister said. Minister Peiris said Kadirgamar was also instrumental in convincing the UN system to declare Vesak Poya as an international holiday.
While noting that Kadirgamar was a distinguished alumni of the University of Oxford, Minister Peiris said:“He insisted that Oxford had contributed only the icing in the cake. In his own words Kadirgamar insisted that the cake had been baked at home. I think that is an apt remark because everything he believed and cherished to be sacrosanct evolved in a context of a national tradition which derived from the soil of Sri Lanka”.
Kadirgamar Institute Executive Director Asanga Abeyagunasekera also addressed the gathering.

Useless third rate Tamil traitor who never cared for the Tamils. Only Tamil by name. Hardly spoke Tamil and all his wives were European women and Sinhalese. He bum sucked the Sinhalese and impressed them by aiding and abetting the ethnic cleansing of Tamils. Tamils will only spit on this creature and statue

Kadirgama was a great man. If he had been allowed to live, he may well have become Prime Minister or even President. But the LTTE couldn't allow that.

It would not serve their agenda to have a Tamil president fo two reasons.

- One, the international community would see it as a great step forward for race relations and would therefore not be fooled by accusations of racial discrimination.

- Two. The tamils in Sri Lanka would no longer see Prabakharan as their leader and would instead follow Kadirgama.

But his assassination was the biggest mistake the Tamils ever made. He would have resolved the ethnic conflict without the loss of life that we saw.

So what if his wives were foreign. So were KP's and Balasigham's

the LTTE killed Kadirgama and all intelligent Tamil politicians. Why? were all Tamil politicians siding with the sinhalese?

No!- its because the low caste LTTE needed the support of the Tamils people. The Tamil people didn't support the low caste LTTE until all other Tamil politicians were killed.

You don't understand that the war could've been won by intellectuals rather than losing 100,000 tamils in a losing war

Because he is one, irrespective of who assassinated him. The Rajafucksys assassinated him as they thought he may became too powerful.

Lakshman is a traitor because he didn't believe in Eelam?

And all those tamil politicians who were murdered by the LTTE also didn't believe in Eelam.

So you killed anybody who didn't want a mono-ethnic homeland for the Tamils.

And now you say that Eelam is the aspiration of all Tamils .....

Of course it is, because you killed everyone else !
