$35 a day 'incredibly tough', says PM

There are 2 comments on the AdelaideNow... story from Jan 4, 2013, titled $35 a day 'incredibly tough', says PM. In it, AdelaideNow... reports that:

PRIME Minister Julia Gillard has avoided directly answering whether she could live off $35 a day, only stating it would be ''incredibly tough''. Under changes to the welfare payment scheme, the majority of the 84,000 single parents who receive parenting payments will be moved to the Newstart Allowance when their youngest child turns eight.

Its not the first week or two that is the toughest either. Over time things go like your car, your fridge, you may need health treatment not covered by the PBS, even your shoes get worn out and cannot be replaced reducing you to tears. Its so demoralising and i was on even less than $35 a day as a student on austudy -$200 a week needed for food, getting to TAFE, school materials etc. It was not my fault all the jobs in my field got sent to India and i had to re-train in a field that was in demand.
If there is a small percentage of people on this payment long term they would all be very depressed and living a low quality of life.
A way to make sure their payments are not going on drugs and drink would be for Centrelink to offer food vouchers in addition to the payment. This would help so much as even the weekly supermarket bill far exceeds the measly newstart payment.

If the Labor government increases dole payments, I'm not going to bother struggling working in part-time work in 31-36c heat; and instead I'm going to become just another dole bludger.
Stuff it, why should I even keep trying if the government's going to pay dole bludgers close to what I earn after tax actually working.

Basically, if the government does increase dole payments, they can find the revenue to pay for another one, because I simply won't bother trying any longer.
