This is a foolish move.
Australia should cut defense budget and spend it on teaching refugees how to farm and send them home.
Don't make extreme statement like shoot to kill them etc because no body is going to listen.

By the time they are ready to go back they have a family and brought half of their extended family over from where they come from, what we should do is instead of rescuing the boats they should just tow them back out of Australian waters

Are u going to do that yourself?
The task is to find a solution that is not extreme yet effective and stand firm.
If you tow some boats back for two weeks, then the pressure mount, then you capitulate. I am 100% sure this will be the case.
It's not wise.
You must have a solution that you are prepared to defend.

Apparently the navy claims the people smugglers make a hole in the ship and when an Australian ship is ovserved they immediately send a mayday and pull the bungs that plug the holes. Actually means the neavy has only two choices
a) let the ship sink and watch the passengers die
b) resuce the passengers...

The navy already picks them up and bring them here, they know if they get into Australian waters they just have to disable their boat and send out a distress signal and the navy will come and take them the rest of the way. A couple of weeks ago the navy picked up a boat from Indonesian waters and still brought them here. What I'm saying instead of bringing them here take them back

Australian Navy can't move freely in Indonesian water. Quite frankly the Indonesian don't want them, neither do these refugees want to settle down in Indonesia.
I am quite sure the number of asylum seekers to Australia will increase to many times the 20,000 quota. Then there will be conflict with Nahru and Papua New Guinea unless there is a program to help these miserable people at the source.

Isn't there some way to jam their "distress signal" and just ignore it as if it did not exist.

If they sink themselves, they are to blame.
