Should anyone be surprised? Gillard is a career feminist. She would shun any gesture that might associate her with feminine tradition.

It's about time that aussie stand up and tell the monarchy that australia is an independent and sovereign nation.

WE DON'T NEED A FOREIGN QUUEN TO BE OUR HEAD OF STATE.

Well get a vote on it then. If the majority agree with you then get rid of the monarchy.

Would you be happy with either vote Aussieman?

That thing you are replying to is not an Australian.

This would have to be the first time she has actually stood for some kind of principle since becoming PM. Too bad it is merely a token gesture.

I feel that the prime minister should have curtsied to Her Msjesty. It would have just been simple good manners. As long as Her Majesty is the queen of Australia, everyone should play the game. It's good clean fun and no one gets hurt.

Yes, but it is a game many of us do not want to play.
If you feel strongly about it, perhaps you could adopt her as your head of state? Just don't send any of your leaders to us in exchange.

I agree. Some polite gesture of deference should not be dissected afterwards ad infinitum by small-minded grouches.

Remember the furor that erupted when some thought that Obama had bowed a smidgin too deeply on meeting the Queen? Same thing. Either the gesture is too slight, or it's too pronounced. Either way the pretentious Bow Watchers out there, never to be pleased, will chorus their petty outrage for days afterwards.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Queen's attention is much less riveted by such things than are the media hounds.

Gillard thought she was showing conviction in her belief for a republic by avoiding the curtsy. A sign of defiance, she thought it would go down well.

Instead even republicans cringed at her lack of protocol and perceived lack of manners. Awkward and embarrassing.

Later she tried to compensate by bowing but she obviously over did it and looked awkward.

The Queen is probably astute enough to be aware of the games politicians play and is most likely equally perplexed at Abbott's request for a female succession and allowance for catholic spouses to the throne.

Gillard made excuses that her advisors mentioned the curtsy was optional. This was a cop-out. She must now realise she is looking very fragile in the eyes of swinging voters. There are many who would put up with 3 yrs of Abbott now just to get rid of her. Labor's best strategy is to appoint a new leader before the next election (other than Rudd).
