I think we shoild disband the military and let someone take us over and see how the rest of the world feels
Probably just fine. We were not asked; the matter was not debated. It was years in the making, because the Australian unit which was removed from Darwin came into this 'hood, but nobody told anybody they were making room for Americans. It was sprung on us. So far so good.

Then came Obama and his 'and we're here to stay', saying that so arrogantly that we do not seem to be eligible to have a say over how long foreign troops are on our soil. Surely it is not up to him how long?

In the Australian fora people were then questioning if this could cost us money. No, some writers who seemed to be knowledgeable said, they even pay for their own ammunition. But now it emerges that the cost structure has not been finalised 'and who pays for their training'. Excuse me? You pay for your own training, which is jungle warfare apparently. The war theatres in the planning, Syria and Iran, do not have any jungle last time I looked.

The American military exists to protect the business of American corporations, especially those who suck money out of the US economy and public purse to hoard it in the Cayman Islands. And we are to pay for this? The economies will not recover unless large unproductive expenditure like the military machine is reduced.

'Fine' does not refer to your 'take us over', only to how we'd feel with less of your military.

Big yawn.
Not so much a yawn when you consider we have to pay for the troops.

For the Okinawa troops the Japs pay 75 %, which was somewhat justifiable when it was established when Stalin was still in the Kremlin. Germany used to pay 100 %, maybe still does. Consequently, four months after they arrived in Darwin, they are now 'negotiating' that Aussies pay for the training of foreign troops.

The troops and the forthcoming unknown costs were sprung on Australia and are 'here to stay'(Obama) so naturally we are upset. Is this democracy?

The crime rate is of interest as US soldiers never have to face justice where they commit crimes. They are above the law and simply transferred, just like the priests.

Someone who seemed to know said on TV last night that even if the presence were increased and we would build them a billion Dollar base, the local economy outside night clubs would not benefit as they would buy duty free in their PX. I remember that from Frankfurt and Berlin, you never see them in the shops or cafés.

It is not so much the presence of these guys that is upsetting but the conditions.
