I guess some would like to convince themselves that going downhill was the direction that they wanted to go in just as there are those who would like to believe that being in the 5hit and having the chance of a lifeline thrown down gives them an advantage over those that havenít been in the 5hit for a long time but look like they might end up in there.

But the media image of the Chinese leaders is better because we are thankfully typically not plagued with the never ending 'warts and all' attacks on their performance and personality. Perhaps this is what gives them the ability to get on with the real job of governance rather than spending their time ducking questions and preening for the camera.
