Africa: China in the Heart of Africa

Nov 30, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: AllAfrica.com

"China's gift to Africa." The new headquarters of the African Union, a towering 20-storey building in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is so called because China picked up the $200 million tab for the state-of-the-art complex.

Not all Africans have welcomed China's gift. West African political commentator Chika Ezeanya Africa: China in the Heart of Africa wroote <Quote>
considers it an "insult to the AU and to every African that in 2012 a building as symbolic as the AU headquarters is designed, built and maintained by a foreign country." <Quote>

Why some West Africans? Do you still wish AU quarter to be relocated to Libya? What is your problem?

Columbia University Press, the editors Chris Alden, Daniel Large and Ricardo Soares de Oliveira note

<Quote> "The overarching driver has been the Chinese government's strategic pursuit of resources and attempts to ensure raw material supplies for growing energy needs within China." The world's second-biggest economy currently buys more than one-third of Africa's oil <Quote>

Mr. Chris Alden, is it your business to comment on the friend ship of China to Africa? Westerns, you look jealous after forgetting Africa in your golden time. We have no business with your bankrupted nations.

Right. Why they don't forget what they have missed? Africans were always in search of good friends to work with, and what is this all nuisance when Africa starts to work with China, a strong partner to work with. It is our resource and no body is concerned about that but We Africans. We need to use that resource now with our new partener.

Have you considered using your resources yourselves instead of letting a foreign power exploit them?

I don't see them critisizing the Statue of Liberty in America, it was designed and built in France. We say thank you to China for the gift to all aAfrican people. May be some day we will built them a statue as a gift. This all is in the game of international diplomacy. Ofcourse if it was for those Ethiopians like Elias Kiflae who are paid agents of Eritrea and Egypt, they will oppose anything built in Ethiopia. They want the AU relocated to Egypt.

Sure, but we have many areas where we don't have the skills, knowlege and capital, to explore what we have. Africans were always looking for the west assistance, for a very long period of time.

But, westerns have got a very destorted and undermining look, they don't believe in mutual benefit, rather they want to robb all raw materials as they were doing during the colonial era. Still, many Europians have got that mentality, and they tend to favour their ancient African colony while forgetting all others. If you see UK, they favour Egypt and Kenya more than any other African nation.

How can you expect good relationship with these countries? No! Actually Chinese are friendly and not racist, they also believe in mutual benefit. We are also lucky for having them.

The journalist was trying to point the fact that some West Africans tend to undermine the construction of the AU head quarter here in Addis, by Chinese. I remember some Senegalis at the AU summit proposed the AU HQ move from Ethiopia to Libya. That was shame and based on this and other information I have, it is possible that some Western Africans are not wel-coming the construction of the HQ here.

I see no valid reason why these West Africans are not interested in AU here, and their pretext to undermine the building is not logical. Besides, many efforts for getting this fund is made by our former PM, and other Ethiopians. What exactly is there need?

They are using their resources to bring money and development into the country and accessing resources which they do not have the capital to exploit themselves.

It is a win win situation, China is not putting a gun to anyone's head and not throwing anyone in jail like colonialists. They are building some amazing structures that are much needed in Africa, schools, bridges, irrigation sysyems, residential units, dams, windmill farms, solar farms and no military presence to bully Africa. They are doing it the right way, they are working with Africa .

Reality check:

You can get investment capital from anywhere if you have lots of natural resources. Investment funds all over the planet will buy preference shares in any new ventures which are government backed.

That solves all the problems you mention without giving away any of your resources. Surely that makes Ethiopia better off?

In fact the only reason I can see for you selling off these resource fields is corruption in your government.

Wrong. China supplied second-rated, environment unfriendly equipment to the Africans. That's so wrong.

Look at China. Even in China, they used the second-rated, polluted equipment on their own people. China is one of the most polluted nations on earth.

The Africans should work more with the superior American companies. Yes, we are quite a bit more expensive but we are all worth it.

This Snowflake is a treacherous Chinese, living in America but he always anti-America and pro-China. I would respectfully ask him to leave America or someday we will round him up to expel him.

Chinese are so treacherous. You cannot trust them. Even Chinese don't trust each other. LoL.

China’s latest import to Africa? A ghost town in Angola

http://business.financialpost.com/2012/07/03/...

But the apartments in the complex cost somewhere between US$120,000 and US$200,000 according to online advertisements cited by BBC. Other anecdotal reports put the price of 3-bedroom apartment at about US$250,000.

None of which helps the average Angolan given the country’s per capita GDP of US$5,144 per year, according to the World Bank.

It seems logical, but for your information, the costs of buying or getting these investment is very high. We can't afford, rather our borrowing to china exim bank and from various multinational organization is mostly cheap or zero interest bearing. We can't borrow more than we can afford to pay.

Infact the Chinese give you the fund and the related package on the use of that fund, and as we can see today all the funds that we are getting is bringing visible results. We see the change with our eyes and no body needs to tell us this. Infrastructure developments are now beyond one can imagine and development is every where, thanks to China, our new partner.

Regarding corruption, yes we can't deny that and that is our head ache today, as no contry is free on that. I admit corruption has increased at alarming rate and it is just in this regard that our development effort may be hamperd. However, corruption is always within the general policy and not out of that. We have strong policy to work with China, while some of our officials are in corruption. No deny on that, but that doesn't indicate that we have to change our policy. It is just our fault.

Don't trust China, don't trust the West. Trust Russia. I recommend the African folks to seek out the Russians.
