Hu Jintao tells China navy: Prepare for warfare

Aug 5, 2012 | Posted by: ngali | Full story: www.bbc.co.uk

China is locked in territorial disputes with several other nations in the South China Sea. China's navy should speed up its development and prepare for warfare, President Hu Jintao has said. He told military personnel they should "make extended preparations for warfare".

This news is six months old - but still it gives some context to the recent request for a naval base expansion in Perth, and deployment of US Marines in Darwin.

China's never been militarily aggressive in modern times (not that they were capable of it) but they're starting to get pushy in the South China Sea.

What's up with that?

That speech was made after Obama announce his "pivot Asia" policy under which USA is planning to station six aircraft carrier battle groups in the Pacific (currently only two).
What do you think he should say if you are in his shoe?

I think China has getting ready to sink them.

It's the Chinese way. In recent decades, the Chinese were peaceably facilitated to concentrate on only economic development. Now, its massive ramping up time with economic development. With that comes teeth in East Asia.

Regularly watch English language Chinese government "CTV" news. Its on Foxtel. Gives a good context of modern China's hysterical nationalism and tantrums against other regional countries that don't conform to the 21st century Chinese government. CTV discussion programs are particularly informative. Thus, the government is molding quite a nationalistic Chinese populace, if not just the schooling. "The West is against us" mentality is common. Also, China has an engorgement sensation re-occuring, alongside it's military buildup. Feeling good about itself again. Wants to reclaim it's Ming dynasty Eurasian and SE Asian overlord status. And, some Chinese fret and whine that weaker countries don't already capitulate in awe of Chinese modern military and economic clout.

Personally I can't wait till the Chinese are taught a lesson they will never forget, in some ways this will an epic war with the west vs the east, it will be known as the war of 1000 suns. the Chinese should remember what happened to. Imperial Japan, in the dustbin of history and that will be china's fate or the cccp and through in the Chinese people as they will be obliterated

It could be argued (and I think correctly so) that Obama is responding to an unprecedented build up in the Chinese navy - and some undeniable military aggression in the South China Sea by China towards it's smaller neighbours.

1974 China invades the Parcel Islands killing 70 Vietnamese.

1988 A naval clash at the Spratly Islands between China and Vietnam leaves 60 Vietnamese sailors dead.

2005 Chinese ships open fire on Vietnamese fishing boats killing two.

March 2009 Chinese ships harrassed a U.S. ocean surveillance ship

March 2011 Chinese ships harrass Philippino exploration vessels.

May 2011 Chinese fishing boats ram Vietnamese exploration cables.
Vietnam and China both hold live round naval exercises.

June 2011 Norwegian ship working with Vietnam companies harrassed and exploration cables cut by Chinese patrol boats.

May 2011 - Chinese patrol ships sabotaged Vietnamese oil exploration vessels and cut cables.

April 2012 - China sends gunships to forcibly prevent Chinese fishermen being arrested by Philippino naval forces for illegal fishing on the Scarborough Shoal.

And mind you - this is all during an unprecendented Chinese Naval buildup....

In the last half century of conflict in the South China sea, the casualties were less than 1 week in Afghanistan. You are now whining about some cable cut as though it is ww3.

I wouldn't go into the historical background because that will take days to finish.
Also you seems to have forgotten the 100s of Chinese fishermen arrested and killed by the Vietnamese and Filipinoes.

Again I want to ask you what would you do when a nation like USA with 700 bil military budget, invaded half dozen countries every decade now consider China as enemy number one?
To any normal regular person China's military build is only normal

Typical line of argument coming out of China.

Don't look at what we're doing. America is doing evil all the time - so leave us alone - to do whatever we want.

Fallacious comparison - with nothing to do with what we're talking about.

Another regular feature is the complete lack of proof or even an argument apart from - America does bad stuff - so ignore what we do.

What would you do when your massive neighbour increases it's military spending 34 times to build up a navy, harrasses your vessels and claims waters right next to your country - but thousands of kilometres from theirs.

That's what Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Brunei face right now - and that's what we're talking about.

Almost NO-ONE thinks so....

China’s military rise
Apr 7th 2012

NO MATTER how often China has emphasised the idea of a peaceful rise, the pace and nature of its military modernisation inevitably cause alarm. As America and the big European powers reduce their defence spending, China looks likely to maintain the past decade's increases of about 12% a year... The country is on course to become the world's largest military spender in just 20 years or so

Why are you posting so much about Asian issues? Your hatred for Asians is so apparent, but considering that you're a hillbilly, that is hardly surprising.

How about you put a sock in it and stop embarrassing yourself? You think you know a lot about everything when in fact you can't even get your geography right?

I know where you live, and I enjoy socking people like you....in fact, I do it for fun. Beware waffen ss, I am coming for you.

The comparison is relevant because most people have a pretty good idea of what's happening to Afghanistan. Moreover Obama is using it as an excuse to get his finger into SE Asia.

OK Let's hear your reasons for pointing finger at China for the battle of Paracel Islands. Hope you know where to look for those Islands on a map.
