THE latest train fare evaders on Central Trains' services have been named and shamed by the company.

They had to pay out 14,323 in fines, costs and compensation during January.

"These people may have thought they'd save some extra cash for the January sales, but instead fare dodging has cost them dearly."

Russell Price, head of revenue protection for Central Trains
Now, the 82 people convicted of the offence - 15 of whom were from south Worcestershire - have their names listed on posters displayed at stations across the Midlands.

The offenders also ended up paying around 10 times more than their ticket would have cost.

The name and shame initiative began in March 2005 in the West Midlands and since then the number of rail users travelling without a ticket has dropped from around 800 a day in the Greater West Midlands area to 400 a day, out of approximately 13,000 passengers.

The scheme was extended to the whole of the Central Trains' network during August 2006.

Russell Price, head of revenue protection for Central Trains said: "These people may have thought they'd save some extra cash for the January sales, but instead fare dodging has cost them dearly.

"Many of them were fined around 200, but a few paid more than 300.

"However, there were less fare dodgers in December and January, compared with November, so hopefully the message is getting through to people - no ticket, no excuse."

The 15 people convicted for fare evasion in south Worcestershire area are: Worcester: Jason Barnes, aged 31 of Ransome Avenue,172 Stephen Hall, aged 25 of Lichfield Avenue,205 Ryan Newman, aged 27 of Carlisle Road,205 Thomas Quill, aged 29 of Teme Road,202 Humaira Begum, aged 22 of Wylds Lane,305 Droitwich: Michela Brookes, aged 35 of Ploughmans Walk,201 Kate Davies, aged 45 of Shepherds Place,127 Ben Newton, aged 22 of Stalls Farm Road,202 Tracey Reeves, aged 42 of Charland Court,202 William Reeves, aged 43 of Charland Court,202 Paul Bowman, aged 22 of Charland Court,177 Malvern: James Gillott, aged 39 of Malvern Road,141 Peter Farr, aged 23 of Highfield Road,174 Stourport on Severn: Ian Vernon, aged 22 of Broomy Close,74
