I moved here from Detroit and I have to say that if a world famous athelete who grew up in the city, was retiring, and throwing a party it would be much better promoted locally. Not only is Floyd world famous he has crossed over and is one of the biggest names in sports in the world. From my knowledge he does an annual bar-b-Q also not getting publicity (the event is free) and is in plans to build a community center. Its a shame that he is portrayed locally as a thug, its a shame that when you talk about the Mayweather family in this town people have a negative story, and its a shame that for a city that is trying to grow most of this can be blamed on the fact that Floyd is Black. I have heard the stories about the families drug problems and I have hear the stories about how Floyd got in a fight at the B.O.B but why can't I hear about all the good things he does today? Why does a Floyd Mayweather event get barried at the bottom of the page? This guy should be celebrated, his events should be known by everyone in the city, his cross over appeal should be used to bring the city together, but as an outsider living in Grand Rapids it looks like the city isn't interested in that. On the radio and with public opinion locally I never not rarely never hear anything positive associated with the Mayweather family and its a shame because it looks to be there to report. Floyd thanks for coming to town again maybe someday you'll get the respect you've earned but haven't been given - mjhamc48823@yahoo.com

Floyd hasnt "earned" a bit of respect. Yes he is a good fighter, but he is a terrible person. I enjoy watching good athletes doing what they do best but that is where it stops. He is an absolutely terrible person. He does treat everyone equally though, everyone is sh1t compared to him. Anyone who has been near Floyd for any amount of time knows exactly what I am talking about. So he can fight, big freaking deal. How is it the fault of the people of Grand Rapids that he acts like a thug? That is how he acts when the cameras aren't rolling. I hope after he retires he moves and stays away Grand Rapids for good.

What has he crossed over? He started as a boxer and ended as a boxer.

By the way this has nothing to do with his skin color. He brought the negativity on himself by acting like a self rightous prick whenever he graced GR with his presence.

What a sad case. Such a pity that this BEAUTIFUL person comes across as such an ugly individual. Full of hate. He/She is the kind who drives wedges in the gap between ethnic groups. Sad, truly sad.

Yeah I don't know him and don't know anyone who really does. Dancing with the stars crossed him over I would think lots of people who don't really follow sports know who he is. There are lots of stories but I'm not really aware of one that has happened in the last 10 years and the guy is 32 years old? Lots of what you write sounds like you had a bad experience with him? I watched HBO 24/7 he came across cocky. I don't know him but I know the guy is an entertainer. I also know the only things I see about him in the press are negative, that the 2 years I lived here he has done free city events that didn't get any publicity, that he is holding a major event in GR that got no publicity, and that he held a press conference to say he was investing a few million dollars in GR to build a boys and girls home that I saw on the 11 o'clock news. On the surface his actions seem ok to me. Floyd could be an ambassador for this city but it seems GR would rather show him the door.

I don't care much for Maywheather either, and agree with Red that he's a legend in his own mind. But at the same time, if he could become a role model and inspire the thugs to start caring about their communities and people in it, and stop the violence and gang activity, it would be a good thing. He would earn the respect of many, including myself.

Those communities are in dire need of a role model.

Geez! Seems like everyone here is a hater!

I don't know him personally but I do live on the SE side and I have heard good things about him. While he may seem cocky and arrogant - he's a fighter and entertainer people! I have heard when he comes to GR he is very generous to the locals, treating them to free ice cream, turkeys, etc. I know he also has a foundation here in GR and I think he's done some stuff in Las Vegas for kids too. An old friend works at a jewelry store on Fulton and said he came in awhile back with his entourage and that they were very courteous and respectful.

Just because you don't hear anything good, doesn't mean he's not doing it. Unlike some other Grand Rapidians who have their names plastered all over something when they are a part of it or donate money to something.

And I do have to say that I voted for him on Dancing with the Stars! HA!

I went to the events on Monroe Center and had a fantastic time. There's lots of fun events for children and booths with food with proceeds going to community organizations.

The news kept mentioning that the proceeds go to the Mayweather Foundation. But I haven't seen what the Mayweather Foundation puts money into? Does anybody know for sure?
