The story about Fred Custardo back then was that he arrived at his apartment late one night drunk, was locked out, and tried to crawl in through a window. He fell, and died a few days later in the hospital. If you knew Fred (I went to Illinois with him), the story rings true.<quoted text>according to the ongoing urban legend, hull, 1 punch, at ditka's old bowling alley, which is still a bowling alley, the willowbrook bowl, willowbrook, il. a big blackhawk buddy of mine, says he asked hull about this a few years ago at one of those charitable golf outings, over drinks afterwards. and hull said no, total bs. he also said hull had a huge grin when asked, laughing all the time and saying there was no truth to the story, but bobby did admit hearing about this story numerous times. so who knows, i doubt google. there was always a lot of notoriety involved with ditka's bowl. sometime in that 1962-65 period, one of the quarterbacks from the university of illinois was killed at ditka's bowl. i can't remember any of the details or the outcome. i believe the qb's name was fred custardo, and the 2 bear players detained were bill george, and joe marconi. as i recall, it was one of those things, that was very hushed up. my guess, a fight broke out, accidental death, and out of court settlements. really loved sports back then as a teenager. those guys didn't make much money back then, and hardly any pension money. that's why ditka jumped on that disability cause for those old nfl players. all the athletes of today should pray to the god, of curt flood.

I am Fred Custardo's Nephew and that is the same story my father, Michael Custardo said. Unfortunately, it is true and he was never able to play in the NFL where he was a very promising player.
