While it is finally safe to stow away the skis after a snowy Chicago winter, travelers at Midway Airport will navigate through a new slalom course when going through security lines beginning Thursday.

"We continue to evaluate the use, cost and effectiveness of the Registered Traveler program..."
Sounds like a load of bull to me. How many years are they going to give us this answer? C'mon ORD/MDW!! If you're not going to do the program here just say so. I'd sign up for this in a heartbeat if they'd just get off their arses and offer it already!!

I travel through ORD once a week and the biggest problem I see is with staffing. ORD has a tremendous number of actual lanes, but they rarely have all of them open. If they opened up all of the security lines, things would move much better.

On a similar note, why the heck are all of the employees at ORD so damn angry all the time. The TSA people, McDonalds workers, parking both attendants, etc., are the nastiest people I come across at any airport in the country. What's the deal with that?

Just read your poll.... Looks like the fast lane will be the casual... cause' it looks like everyone (typical) is a 'know it all'.... An expert, like the guy or girl in the black SUV that cuts into traffic like madman... They are 'expert' drivers.... If you asked any driver, are you a new driver, a casual driver or an expert driver.... The expert drivers can use the fast lane...
What lane is going to be full people???

So called expert.... The computerized check-in should see how many times you have flown and what time your flight is... Then tell you which line to go in....

Not to sound negative, it won't work....

Come on. Everyone's going to pick the shortest line every time....just like always.

WHY in the world are you eating at McDonalds anyway. You have a choice there. Don't spend your time or money there!

Wow Heather what an unnecessary, useless, and disappointing comment from a seemingly educated citizen.

People are just going to go in whatever line is shortest.

So now I get to be punished for traveling with a toddler? My husband and I can whip him out of the stroller and be through that line faster than many people traveling alone. And now I've got a special line so that other people don't feel like they might be held up by me. Forget it. Of course, the novice line is going to be empty anyway, since nobody is going to elect themselves anything but expert, so maybe this will work in our favor.

I'm heading to Midway today...and I can't WAIT to see the cluster-you-know-what caused by the new signs! Hooray!

In theory I think the lines are a great idea. Seeing as I travel once or twice a month back to Florida and get stuck behind the novice traveler who had no idea you couldn't take a 16 oz bottle of hairspray on the plane in your carry on or the family with 4 kids that are stammering at the 'rules'...all the while I have my shoes in hand, my Ziploc with 3 oz items waiting to be dropped in the gray bin and my stainless steel watch tucked in my purse. This scenario when it happens (usually every other trip at the least) can be a bit daunting. However, I can't help but think that the lines will create their own form of chaos.

I find it amazing that someone thinks that a system designed for ski slopes will be recognizable to everyone. It's not just that I am a flatlander--and I actually went skiing once--but I had no idea there was a scheme for shapes and colors of signs. And I don't think most other people will get it either.

Thank you Amy. I agree with you totally.

I resent that because I am travelling with a child I have to use the same lane as those who never travel. My child and I can whip through security faster than most business travelers. The key to getting through quickly is knowing the rules and being prepared not whether you have a child in your group or not.

Yes, there are families that seem to be clueless, but these are the people who never travel and therefore do not know the rules or are simply disorganized.

Unfortunately, most self assessed "experts" are not. They are the same ones you end up running around, up and over in foot races due to their egotistic and over-optimistic self perception. As a high mileage business traveller, I can say with great confidence that a so-called "expert" category comprises no where near the 70%, plus, self reported in this article.

Sorry, but you and other parents are a constant source of irritation at all points while travelling. Just get in the "family line" so the rest of us do not have to deal with your annoying child while you unpack all of your crap, explain to your child that he/she needs to take the shoes off, that he/she can not have liquids, etc.

Give it a chance, people. I'll admit that I, too, was skeptical when I first heard of this new process months ago, but it has proven itself in the airports where it has been deployed. I do agree that the particular symbols chosen will be meaningless to anyone who doesn't ski, but we'll get used to them.

I am curious of how this is going to work out. I agree with Dan that there will be more "sell-assessed" experts than actual experts.

I've actually had TSA employees comment impressed at how quickly I get my bag, computer, liquid, shoes and coat in bins and on the conveyor belt. I have an efficient system and it works. Does that make me an expert? Who knows.

To the women with the kids, you may think you are whippin' your toddler through security, but you are still slow compared to the rest of us -- sorry. I avoid standing behind you like the plague. And if I can avoid sitting next to you on the plane, I do that, too. Please take note that you are the only one who enjoys the sound of your kid's constant chatter.

While the idea in concept sounds good, the reality will be totally different (especially if the 75% currently polled will use expert line go through with that).

What they need to do is have uniform appication of the rules at screening.

I went through YYZ returning to ORD several weeks ago and had to take out all wires from my laptop bag, along with my belt, shoes, watch, etc, while my coworker only had to take her laptop out of her bag & the guy behind me didn't even have to remove his belt.

While I certainly don't mind doing such things if it means we'll all be safe, but I don't see the benefit of it if everyone doesn't go through the same process.

Wow- what a lot of kid haters on here.
I dont think this system will work. I am no expert flyer. I go about once a year or every other year but I know what I can bring and what I cant. It's not like airports are the only place with screening lanes (ever been to a courthouse?)
But if the TSA is not going to force people to go in certain lanes- then what is stopping "slow" people from going in the "fast" lanes. Everyone wants to get to the other side.
Imagine times like Christmas. Do you want to be in a line that looks to be about 20 minutes long or 5 minutes?

I have seen this work at other airports, surprisingly. Then I was leaving Orlando and we were in the security line for 15 minutes before even seeing the novice-casual-expert signs because the lines were so long. I remember thinking, "Oh, THAT would have been good to see before all of the Disney-visiting families evenly dispersed themselves among the lines."

I think it's promising, though it'll take a while before the once-a-year travelers have seen it and understand it (I still see people in airports who haven't heard of the rules about liquids).

Oh- and to the arsewipe who thinks that there should be racial profiling. give me a break. You look like Timothy Mcveigh (sp) or the unabomber. There are terrorists other than muslims. Give me a break.
Even the shoe bomber guy was puerto rican (from chicago)
