Jordyn Wieber stunner: "Quite honestly, it's horrific"

Jul 30, 2012 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Salon

Jordyn Wieber is a controlled crier. At all of 17, wearing a long sleeved purple leotard and a little too much rouge, her life-long dream smashed - not because she'd done anything horribly wrong, but because she hadn't done it perfectly right - the gymnast-that-couldn't put her hands over her eyes and cried, before accepting a shoulder in which to ... "Shouldn't the Olympics have every country involved, and doesn't it hurt the chances of smaller countries who have less of a chance to be represented?" NEWS FLASH it's the OLYMPICS!!! The best in the world should be competing and in gymnastics all around it should be the top 24 in the world, not some two girls from each country rule. Jordyn Wieber was #4 in the entire lineup and she's the defending world champion, why the heck should she not be in the finals? Girls got into finals because of a stupid rule, they aren't even close to Jordyn

She DID score higher, she was the FOURTH overall placer, but due to the archaic "competitive" clause, only TWO athletes from each country can advance. So never mind that there were two dozen ladies the Jordan DESTROYED, Jordan can't advance because the US has TOO MANY good gymnasts. At least we won team gold, so all is not lost. The competition is rigged anyhow. Those "sports" where it's a Judge's opinion on how an athlete did should be dropped. Only objective sports should stay. Political political political

finish in the top 2 from the US and she's in
Its not rocket science and its not like she didn't know about this in advance.

You seem to have missed the entire point of the olympics. It's not the world championships, this is about countries competing against each other, not solely individuals.

If you applied your logic to the Olympics then where would it stop? Instead of having 8 countries competing the team final you could have 8 American teams instead? Wouldn't that bring countries together, sitting there watching 40 Americans battle it out!? Oh hang on, that's why you have national championships, for Americans to compete with Americans.

The olympics is about the top athletes from each country competing, NOT the top athletes in the world facing off. Everyone knows the rules before the start Jordyn included, they are there to essentially keep a worldwide presence in the finals which is what the Olympics are for.

Very well put my friend. Could not agree with you more. Those crying Americans think there should be rules for everyone except them. Jordyn knew the rules going in and simply choked!!!!!!!!!!

If she couldn't finish in the Top 2 among the American gymnasts it simply means she didn't deserve to make the all around finals. The rules are the same for all the countries. Next time don't choke and get better scores. And by the way our friend from the UK is right in that nobody wants to see 5 or 6 American gymnasts in the finals as the Olympics are about countries from all over the world competing. It's bad enough listening to Tim Daggett on NBC when then are 2 gymnasts in the finals. He is so arrogant and biased towards the American gymnasts I had to watch most of the gymnastic competition on mute!!!!!!!!!!

I know let's have 2 sets of rules. One for the rest of the world and one for the U.S. Would that make you feel better? She knew the rules going in and simply choked. The Olympics aren't just about winning but also about the human spirit and giving smaller countries a chance as well. If she wanted to be in the finals, she should have performed her routines better!!!!!!!!!!

Rules are rules end of story. No need to blast a poster and all of America based on this one individual opinion. I agree with the person who said judged sports should be dropped its all political and all fixed. As far as this goes with the rules, well as I said rules are rules deal with it she lost because she was 4th overall and not in the top 2 from USA. I do agree though that upon entering this leg of the contest it should be about the best of the best. I want to see top athletes from EVERY country make, it then the best of the best (if that means all Americans or no Americans so be it) compete for the very top spot. Oh and of people want to complain make it count like how the NBA all stars get to embarrass a bunch of boys from Nigeria. That is where the sad double standards truly exist.

I agree with most of your comments but would not want to see competitors from one country dominate a final. Also agree that judged sports are too subjective so get rid of them. Also like your comments about the men's basketball team. The Olympics are supposed to be for AMATEUR athletes, not these rich spoiled professional athletes who make millions of dollars then hold out for more money. Lebron James said professional athletes should get paid to play in the Olympics. I thought he was an arrogant ass before those comments and lost total respect for him after that as he makes almost $16 million/year. Guess that's not enough for him. Imagine if he had to work for a living like the rest of us????

The headline above should read that " It's terrific not horrific ". Some of these countries have a fraction of the population of the US so this simply levels the playing field. These other countries don't have the same resources and opportunity as the US. I know you probably don't give a crap about that?????

First off, the olympic games are clearly about the best competitors competing against each other. It doesn't matter what country the athletes are from, only how well they excel in their given sports is what matters. Hence, if all athletes competing in an event come from one individual country then so be it. Sure I want my country's athletes to win, but if they don't I don't discredit the ones that do. In fact I applaud their feats! That being said, only the best in the world should be competing, not just the best from a country. Jordan Wieber is clearly someone who rates to compete, but couldn't because of a rule implemented to bring political correctness somewhere it does not belong. These games are about goodwill, and discovering who the top individuals are in their respective sports. It is not about who the best country is.

You are correct of course....the young one's can't remember back to the Olympics of Olga Corbett, when the judging was REALLY POLITICAL....people, even from her own country booing, when she got cheated by the judges, early on....and later, when she stole the show, they did'nt dare screw her over.....things have changed, to the better drastically....now, i only see edgy judging in some of the boxing.......it's a much improved Olympic games....

Your username should be " Insanity ". I am not surprised of your opinions being American. The Olympics are NOT just about the best competitors competing against each other. They are also about dignity, the human spirit, doing more than you could possibly have imagined, SPORTSMANSHIP etc. Were you drunk when you wrote this? Oh no, you are just a typical arrogant American. Who in their right mind would want to see all athletes from one country compete in an individual event? Only Americans. There are 204 countries at the games, not just the US. Jordan Wieber didn't compete in the all around final because she wasn't good enough to beat her own teammates and she has nobody to blame but herself. She knew the rules in advance, and by the way, the rules apply to all countries, including the US. Next time she shouldn't choke!!!!!!!!!!

Crying Americans and rule changes are not what this is about. Jordyn Weiber was ripped off by horrifying judging and if you watched the all around competition then you saw Aly Raisman choke big time. She had no business being in the all around competition because Weiber is clearly the better gymnast. I watched her performances and not once did I see her choke in any of her routines. I simply saw many judging errors. And seeing her cry was not hilarious. Gymnasts, unlike other olympic athletes typically have ONE shot at the Olympics. So all you Weiber haters should take a second to put yourself in her shoes. Imagine how bad you would feel if you had trained and worked hard your entire life for one moment and then had all of your dreams crushed by some faulty judging. You would cry too. I believe that when it comes to the all around competition, the team coaches for each country should get to pick their two all around athletes not some stupid qualification scores. The team coaches know their teams better than anyone, and they know who their best athletes are so why not let them decide? Anyways, LAY OFF OF WEIBER. She can't help what happened, and I think she handled the whole upset quite well

P.S. to all of you who keep referring to the Americans as arrogant, ignorant, and stupid, SHAME ON YOU!!!! So much for coming together in the Olympic spirit. No, instead, you trash some poor 17 year old girl who had no control over the situation at hand after she has already had a hard enough time. Does it make you feel good to put everyone else down? Does it make you feel good to have your noses stuck in the air acting like you're better than everyone else? Honestly, you all need to grow up.
