James City County/Williamsburg has shown great leadership in the past with the creation of Long Hill Road Skate Park near James City/Williamsburg Community Center.

Who would build the park? who would run it? who would maintain it? who would maitain order? Who will pay for the insurance?

Skate parks can draw the wrong crowd. A good example is the skate park at Trashmore; competing punks burned it.

A BMX course would be easier, but the situation is hard to control. BMX riding is a bit dangerous for a publicly funded activity, much like sky diving or automobile racing

You are so right with your stating "This is not a function of government"!

It amazes me how people can get the idea that their favorite hobby or passtime should be funded by somebody else (taxpayers in this case). If they want a facility then they have every right to fund and build one. I don't see anyone or any law that would hinder them.

Appearently, I am not the only person that believes that the City/County/State needs to stay out of building Skate Parks and BMX Tracks. That is the pervue of PRIVATE business, I wouldn't expect the government to come in and build a Bowling Center, a skating rink, or even a Tiddley-Winks Board, much less something where the Goverment would be opening themselves up to HUGE insurance expenses and Liability issues.

Even if you could convince the "majority" of taxpayers then who would protect the minority against government waste of their tax dollars.

I think you need to take an advanced civics course, a course in economics 101 and research why government should never get involved in private enterprises.

You and those who think government should provide you with these type things are no different than the welfare drones except the welfare drones do need the assistance to survive. You just want to play.

I don't think I want to pay for you to play.

you people are rediculous. Did the city pay for any Playgrounds that kids play on? Did they pay any money for Newport News parks? What about baseball feilds?

What is differant about those from a skatepark?

I guess you dont want my kids to be in little league either huh? I dont see how its NOT a function of local government when there is a PARKS AND RECREATIONS department.

Im not expecting a handout any more than a little league organization would. Private parks do not work. The cost to run one privately out wieghs the possibility to turn a profit. That is why the best and most succesful skateparks are city built and Run.

Is it really the worst thing ths city could spend money on? what about the debacle that is happening on Jeffereson near Richneck? How many time sis that traffic patern going to change? How much did that cost? Come on we just want a couple 100k. chip in 3 bux and quit whining.

Ok, the city builds it and runs it, that's a couple hundred Thousand dollars. Some kid using falls and injures himeself, parents now have free reign to take the city to the cleaners for injuries, now there goes a million give or take. More injuries more money, when does it stop?

Can you show me one documented instance of a skatepark succesfully sued for injury?

You guys just need to respect skateboarding for what it is now. Its a serious sport that takes a serious amount of talent, practice and determination. If I had a nickel for every middle aged ignorant jackass that called it "playing" then yea I would build my own skatepark. I say they make a skatepark before they make their 20th? 30th? public basketball court/baseball field for the area. Private funding for a skatepark? first of all skateboarding is nothing like roller skating or bowling. The 200 people you see at the skatepark everyday are the same people everyday. Its not a fun friday night activity for the whole family. And you talk about the crowd it brings? You act like a skateboard park is the only piece of public property to get vandalized since trashmore has been there. That had nothing to do with the crowd that kid didn't even skate. how about the gang violence that surrounds the local b ball court everyday. Understand that its a sport and learn to appreciate it cause it isn't going anywhere and they will make more parks for it.

BMX/SKATE JAM July 25th Williamsburg,VA skate park 12pm to 4pm. Hosted by Danny Parks, Scion, Z-pizza & Parks & Recreations. First event of this kind for this area. A lot of hard work went into pulling this off. All are welcome. Come & watch or jam for free. Food-Music-A lot of great riders-No fees involved. I think its really a shame that all sports don't get recegnition the same way popular sports do. Regardless to what "WE HAVE TO PAY TAXES" no matter what "THE GOVERNMENT WILL DO WHAT THEY WANT WITH OUR TAX MONEY" get over yourself and except it. If the government keeps building and fixing things that we don't need, why can't they build somethin the children can use. With todays society if your child wants to skateboard or be a BMX rider let them do so with ease. I would rather use my tax money on helping people/children then wasting it on MURDERS and paying for their Death Row. I'd rather my child do what they are interested in doing then them going out and killing someone because of the people in the world that don't respect a childs mind.
