Basketball courts have the same issues as this skate park but you don't see the city shutting them down.
These kids need a place to skate. We have a responiblity to provide them with that place. The city pays for lifeguards at city pools, why don't they just cover the cost of adult supervision at the skate park? Off duty PD or Parks and Recreation Personnel, I don't care. But provide the supervision and keep the park open.
Otherwise, you're just pushing the problem out into the streets and neighborhoods.
They are pushing the problem to PARENTS, Dumbazz!

I lived in Boca. We were kids and used to ride all the way there on mopeds just to skate there and skateboard USA. There was also one in WPB for a while.

Today there's a pretty nice one at Brian Piccolo Park. That won't help out the Coconut Creek kids but maybe Coconut Creek might take a lesson from them?

This is a prime example of how parks and recreation officials have lost Track on what our kids are doing today.

Sorry to say, but skateboarding seems to be the activity/lifestyle of our kids. When I was a kid it was the surf culture for lifestyle,
( i sure did not surf!) However, anybody with a set of eyes and a brain can see that today, skateboarding has taken the glory.

So it only makes scene that what these parks and recreational people are facing is not a clash between some so called vandals, drugusers?!
what they are facing is our kids actually using their facility.
It is a clear clash with the kids. period.
And the whole irony is that these kids are one of the main clients of the parks and recreation's department.

Before they made facilities for themselves, tennis, basketball, etc. Well, you take your parks and recreations individual
they build a new facility, a skate park. and all of the sudden, god forbid, THEY ARE BUSY! & THEY NO LIKEY!

So , of course, its easy, close the park call then a nuisance. Then back to the peaceful life of having no clients and concentration on the less and less attending of little league and tennis.

It is almost like having a city ran burger joint, and when you add the new item that is on the menu it becomes a hot seller, the workers don't like the all the work involved in a busy burger joint so they get rid of that hot selling burger, and guess what, things are back to normal. NO clients. meanwhile they are out at another restaurant!

well that other restaurant is the rest of the city itself. Which is now the new skate park and those disturbance calls will now be multiplied and spread out throughout the entire community rather than in a controlled area.

And don't even get me started on this statement by Linda Wiederspan....

""The playground will be conducive to a positive recreational experience without the nuisance of the skateboarders cursing and breaking glass."

---how does she even have this job?

They have one set up on one of the hockey rinks in Weston. Seems like a cop passes through there every couple of hours. We just hide out until he leaves and go back to shreddin' and shmokin'... ;)

I've been skateboarding for 14 years now and at 24 years of age I have a BA from UF and an MS degree from Iowa State (So much for skaters not being college bound). Anyways, the parks are needed when I started skating in the mid-nineties there were no public parks and I basically spent my formative years getting harassed by police for doing the sport I love. Do skateboarders smoke pot, listen to loud music, and have trouble in school? Sure! so do football players, basketball players and baseball players. Most skateboarders are teenagers, drug use and loud music come with the territory.

You are nuts, sure, take the easy way out, let's blame the police for all our problems !! The city is under budget constraints, there are no enough polie to go around, you should take a ride one night in a police cruiser to understand what the police job really is !! then you wouldn't be so quick in blaming the cops for closing down a park !!
Woody, I apologize for the delay in my response, but I was moving and settling in. I appreciate you responding to me laughing at a joke someone made, however, it had nothing to do with the police at all. I also did not refer to the police in my other post. So, you may want to read back and see where you need to actually place that response to. Thank you and have a lovely day.

Just wanted to post a followup and thank the City of Coconut Creek for closing the park.

Now the "bad ones" all skate in my apartment neighborhood in front of my building at all hours of the day and even late at night.

It's such a joy (sarcasm) to hear boards falling onto the concrete while I'm trying to relax on the weekends, petty teenage arguments, girls screaming and giggling because the boys treat them like crap, having the pot smell linger through my windows as I'm trying to let fresh air in and for some strange reason there's been 3-4 break-ins in the past month. So I guess closing the park was worth it because now they are taking over our parking lot.
