Growers say lack of immigration reform is crippling their efforts to harvest crops

Oct 10, 2013 Full story: MLive.com 20

Meeting in the sanctuary of the Christian Reformed Church of North America's headquarters, a coalition of Michigan fruit and vegetable growers said their crops are rotting in the fields because U.S. immigration policy lacks a workable system for migrant workers.

the government knows these growers are hiring illegals. they are suppose to arrest them for doing so.

they complain about not having enough workers. but we all know they just don't want to use the legal system in place.

so, the logical thing to do is confiscate their land under eminent domain law and have the government run the farms.

eliminate the greedy criminal middle man.

These poor growers. I understand their pain.

I've always believed that this was one area that needed immediate reform. The immigration laws on seasonal labor are too cumbersome and expensive. I believe in allowing seasonal migrants to come in and work the fields as long as they go home after the season. No path to citizenship. Let's be honest: these workers want income more than they want citizenship. They don't want to live here; they just want to earn US dollars and bring it back home. If we surveyed these workers, I'm sure they'll tell us the same thing.

Congress can fix this easily. But because the Democrats want a COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION BILL OR NOTHING, this part of immigrations is put on hold. Growers are losing money. Crops are rotting. If the Dems can loosen up and agree with the GOP to fix discrete parts of the immigration code instead of this "all-or-nothing" stance, everyone will win. Our growers will have the labor force they need and the migrants will get the dollars they want and go home.

This is a Democrat problem, no one else. We don't need COMPREHENSIVE immigration reform. We need SPECIFIC immigration reform.

Stop complaining and go out there and do that work. It's obvious that you won't to it so quit complaining about something you wouldn't do yourself.

It's been tried. It turns out drug addicts and criminals do not have the same work ethic as people who walk across hundreds of miles of desert to find work.

Really? You claim ownership of the drug addicts and criminals? If you consider them to be your people then that would explain a lot.

"Hundreds of miles of desert"?? Ha-ha-ha!!! If you're going to lie to embellish your story, at least try and make your farce sound somewhat reasonable.

Nope, but it's apparent that you are. You've obviously never heard of border towns.

What is that supposed to mean? They don't have towns in deserts?

Are you seriously defending the integrity of meth heads? How pathetic.

Are you seriously promoting the stupidity of Mexicans?

If I'm a Mexican attempting to enter this country illegally, am I going to "walk across hundreds of miles of desert", or travel to a border town where I can simply jump a fence?
