Holland, Im not really sure. As your dad is a great pianist and it is really sad that he has not benefitted from the band. I hope that he is doing well. Please pass this along to him.

Lanier was under contract to write for Acuff Rose, so his writing contribution on the first album went uncredited. Perhaps this conflict of interest contributed to him leaving the band. I don't think it was so much a matter of him getting kicked out as it was a matter of having too many irons in the fire.

Shelly,
Lanier is a big part of my life, he taught me music and lived with me my last 2 years of high school. I am still in contact with him today.

Thanks for the comment. I too am "finally" in contact with Lanier. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he is in a low spot in his life.

I stay in contact with Lanier , still Jam with him when he is in Houston , will tell him about this . He is in Austin , still writes and without a doubt one of the best Keyboard Players alive today . Recoded with just the two of us , he played lead with one hand bass with the other and sang , kept perfect time. Love to see him in Fever Tree , He so underrated , Ham did a job on him. Gibbons should showcase him and yes he did write or contribute to ZZ Tops first and more songs that came out later , just a fantastic musician . Think he is a servant or musical Genius. He is that good . Better now then 40 years ago . Salt Lick and Millers Farm , listen to those , the Best ZZ Top songs , he still has not been payed and still talks highly of Gibbons , not so with Ham .

I am calling Lanier , just got off the phone with him , I was driving when he called . Wish we could take up a collection , he has Gigs lined up and session work , I will put some money in his account in the morning .He sure got a kick out of hearing about this but without this open , could not remember names , hell I can't remember a phone # walking across the room .

Wow, this is the most random discussion I have run across lately....Lanier is my father's ex-girlfriend's ex-husband....making Holland sort of a step-brother to me..how strange.

The last I heard of Lanier, which was a couple years ago, was not good news..and I do not know the whole story of Lanier with ZZ Top, he never did delve into those stories but more personal ones with the other members he played with..I do hope he is doing ok, my dad tried to help him out as much as he could, but Lanier is a musician - an amazing one - and therefore, a free spirit..

Talking to Lanier , hes giving me a rundown on everyone , says hi to all y'all , Holland started that cool , he sure Loves Holland , Proud Dad . All for Gibbon's paying him back by at least backing him , write Gibbon ! He owes a huge amount in $ to Lanier , mostly gratitude .
Hell Lanier is still the best Texas has , I am trying too back track to find a goofy song called Houston Girls where we played , the album was released with no credit , we were ripping that night , love to hear the rest of the album , we heard it the next day , told they had others playing , not so at all , I purposely hit double beats with Lanier something we do well together , sent the link so should find it . Rip off again . Right now everyone wants Lanier in Fever tree , what a hoot , Fever Tree dose not now I guess told Rick Campbell even wrote that on Fever Tree Facebook page . As for ZZ Top , lanier wrote so much , but was under contract with acuff-rose , had the lead in TV series the Cowboys , Oh Trent found some masters of Neal Ford and the Fanatics and one with Lanier and Gibbons , this should be good , everyone should write asking Fever Tree Rising to have Lanier join , he would make that bad world class ! www.myspace.com/fevertreeishere

Oh forgot he could fit in with Hill and Beard , both are the real deal , Loved hanging out at the Cellar Club , when there was no band playing we would make one , great times . Miss Rocky Hill , who threw me no less then 5 going away parties at Irene's , even Johnny Winter plugged , had to in to do 45 days for .25 gram of Pot , Just told that Hill has a Book out now with lanier in it .

Lanier , is the best , he lived with me playing and witting . He could do Carnegie Hall or fit in with The Rolling Stones just as easy .
I mean to tell you all he is fantastic , Rickey Harold told me he needs help getting to Dallas and showed me this , I meant Rick .

He told me he was offered a Job in TV seres called the Cowboys , planed to continue Witting for ZZ. I listened to some of the early recordings an honor, man he made Billy Gibbons sound so much better Those old tapes could and should be released there great .
He has gotten even better and writes so much , Music and Lyrics . ZZ Top needs a shot of new old stile , Lanier should be added again , they would have a number 1 for sure .I'll kick in to help get him to recording gig , you can't make money in Austin . Hell if everyone will and send too friends he would make a big comeback , I know I have listened for hours everyday for months on end , he said he could put head phones not to disturb me , told him , hell no , free concert by a master musician and I do mean Master . Can we vote for Lanier to play again with ZZ Top ? I would listen to them again and buy there CD's.
Holland , he talks about you all the time , he is so proud of you .

Wow this is so crazy seeing all the good things people have to say about my uncle lanier. Everyone is right he is the best at what he does. Even though I'm not in Texas at this time I still keep with what my family is doing. I miss lanier a lot he helped me to understand music and how to write it better. He is most deffently gifted in music. I'm happy to know people think so many good things of him. He is a very good person. I'm hoping to make a trip to see him when I make a trip back to Texas. If anyone talks to him tell him Madeline says hello and I love him he is the best uncle.

WOW! I can't believe I stumbled on to this. I'm not in the music business, I was blessed with meeting Lanier & his family when they lived in Edna,TX for a short time. I could listen to Lanier play forever. I have thought of them offen wondering what had happened to all of them. Will keep Lanier in my prayers, hoping for the best for him. He is very talented.

I remember, clear as day, Lanier coming up to me at Allen's Landing in the summer of '69 and telling me he was in a new band named ZZ Top. The news was so new, I wasn't even supposed to tell anyone. We dated for awhile and hung out a lot in those days. Always remembered him as a sweet, sweet man.
