My girlfriend and I (On 2/27) went o New York from the 128 Westwood station.Everything at westwood and on the acela express was excellent. On our return trip 2:00 pm(2/28)on the 82 regional a nightmare was our lot..First the train was 30 minutes behind schedule with no explanation for this. Then on boarding the train after a brief moment for ticketing came a loud articulate female voice directing the passengers to check under their seats and behind the magazine tables and on the floor for trash and we were directed to place the refuse in the containers at the ends of the car. This occured over and over while the train proceeded about every twenty minutes or so.After the fifth serenade by the train person i inquired why we were being interupted.I was informed it was customer service and amtrak required her to do this. I requested her compliance in not further interupting our 4 hour journey ,her reply was if I wanted to sit in trash.I hope this is not normal procedure & I will not ever ride the regional again! I would hope Amtrak values its patrons more than thisWe were stuck at Penn Station for two hours because of the delay with no place to sit,and for the 15 dollar difference in the fare the Acela express is a bargain the regional is the pits.In all fairness to the balance of the regional crew we arrived on time but the gestapo tactics used by this poorly trained /supervised person ruined our trip.

Our family traveled to Disney world a number of times when the children were younger and I agree, it's fun and relaxing. My husband hates to fly and didn't want to chance the weather in the winter so it was the only option for us!

Coach was warm but it was winter and it was snowy going north to michigan I managed to somehow catch a cold going thru to the snack bar for 2 on the return strip. A family heading to Montel's Show told us their miracle rescue story of how the husband had to throw his 5 small children out of a burning building then jump himself. The beautiful children were fine but the dad suffered multiple injuries. At a later date I watched their appearance on his TV show. The wife attempting to change one of the babies diapers and everyone nearby was try to assist with some wipes when we all got into a brief conversation just minutes before we rolled into Penn Sta. on the return trip home and they told us about it. I think they were given $5000.00 on his show which probably got them back home. I wonder if things got better for them.

Domestic air travel used to be synonymous with luxury too. Now traveling by plane is more like riding in a Mexican bus.

Nice article on amtrak, sounds like you had a nice time, but there is one mistake you have in it, there is indeed a waiting room for Amtrak passengers for coach passengers at Penn Station its pretty clearly marked and all you had to do is show your tickets and you would had been able to sit and wait for your train.

Rail service in this country sucks and needs to be improved. We need "bullet trains" like the Europeans and Japanese have, which make rail travel more convenient than flying. Crossing the US on Amtrak is ridiculously slow. Driving is faster and less expensive. Older people I have talked to about rail service tell me that rail service in our country was better in the 40s and 50s than it is today. It would be a good idea to use some of our stimulus packages to upgrade rail travel and make it fast, profitable, and convenient.

I agree with what you are saying, but with all the NIMBYs and their supporting cast of feckless politicians, Amtrak can't even build raised crossings in the Northeast; forget constructing the infrastructure for Bullet Trains.
