Gone With the Wind was one of the most thoroughly researched and historically accurate portrayals of the War For Southern Independence ever written. In spite of its accuracy the book and the movie were greatly criticized by ignoramus liberals for the portrayal of slaves as sassy, overfed, and well dressed. Hattie McDaniel was roundly criticized as a "sellout" and publicly criticized by the NAACP for agreeing to play the part of the servant, Mammie. Hattie, ever sassy in real life too, told the NAACP that she would rather play the role of a servant for $700 a day than be a servant for $7. When criticized that her slave role was not portrayed accurately, Hattie had to remind the critics that her grandparents were slaves and her grandmother specifically was a servant. Hattie said she listened to her grandmother's descriptions of slavery and used to accompany her grandmother to her servant jobs and knew that the role was performed accurately. Hattie won an Oscar for her performance.

The Margaret Mitchell Museum in downtown Atlanta attracts "Gone With the Wind" fans from around the world. The museum is located in Margaret Mitchell's actual apartment where she wrote most of the book. Mercedes Benz spent 5 million dollars to renovate the building and furnish the museum. Vandals set fire to the building twice before the construction was completed. The deliberate arson was apparently the work of anti white racists who did not want the museum in Atlanta. The museum is now surrounded by a security fence and elaborate security cameras and sensors. There have been no more arson attempts in the last decade.

Gone With The Wind is my number one all time favorite movie. I have seen it more times then I can remember, but have actually never once read the book. Maybe because I'm from a younger generation of fans?
I wish I could have had the opportunity to go to this special screening of the movie. I'm sure it was amazing to see. |
