DEMING, NM Following a less-than-anticipated turnout to the first-ever Steakfest, organizers have their set sight on the next four years, which is part of the five-year plan to revitalize an area of Luna County much in need of economic development with unemployment rates that regularly top 20 percent.

Guess math wasn't one of their strong points, last week they were calling for 15,000 now they say 3,000 was 1/3 of the expected crowd ? Seems to me more like 20 %

Can you imagine 3000 bad steaks with poor service. Hope they enjoyed.

well on the positive side there was good music which we dont get much of in deming. leveebreaker really rocked, while the young solo guy with the guitar did a great job with his time.

Geez! In this economy I'd say that was a good crowd and a good start.

I personally enjoyed my day out at the steakfest. Seeing people I had not seen in years also ate some awesome steak. We dont drink so that was not an issue with my family. I loved a lot of the music although I can see where it would be hard for these bands to not stay very energetic when there is such a small crowd. Noone was really giving them any feed back!
I am hopeing that this event grows into something we can look forward to every year! i would love to take my family and eat steak and roasted corn all day. Now a quick message to Van, Honey I think if more events were planned as the musicians were setting up their equipment such as the duck races have the outhouse races or tortilla toss. Come up with something new and exciting to add in that all of the towns country boys might like. Dont forget us country gals also! Have a chase the greesed pig for the little ones or something also. This is about family and I dont believe your promotor from big towns would think of the simple things in life as he is running around in a dirt lot in a silk suit! Honey you could tell that boy was not country! Oh and we may want more medics out there besides just one! I seen a lot of gals out there in heels and short shorts. My thought right away was they were not country either. I was right they turned out to be Jack Daniels girls. Good luck at makeing it a go Van, my family supports you!

If this was supposed to be country, why not have gun slinger impersonators and saloon gals (dressed in attire) do a play or presentation. Call it the Wild West Steakfest or something like that.

I liked the start of what I hope will become something big too! Here are my suggestions for what they're worth: Get the admission price down to about $15. Do away with the wine tasting -- let the winery have its own booth and provide its own samples; that would bring the price down. Have a smaller, more accessible/intimate stage;the performers were so-o-o far away. And the stage itself was pretty far from the core action. Use local performers -- a lot to choose from. Provide more (some!) seating, especially near the food area. Tell people to bring their own chairs for the concerts! Those straw bales got very uncomfortable.

I did feel we got our money's worth with the steak samples and wine; that wasn't a problem, but the admission price scared a lot of people off. Then at the festival, you had to purchase food and drinks in addition, and that was even more money. So -- get that admission down!

Good to see some old friends and the handicapped remainder.
