As a humorous aside, when in the first grade Raines Elementary School (now all-black)(off Clinton Blvd on Flag Chapel Road), our teacher told us that a collection was being taken for the colored lunch room workers and housekeepers and asked if we could bring something. I told my mother, and she went into the pantry and came out with two tins of sardines. Handing them to me she said, "Negroes love sardines."
I don't know if they do or don't, but her comment has stuck with me. This incident took place around 1961-62.
God bless all the good people who took care of us in those days.
