I've always heard that the origin of all racism is "ignorance". I've also heard that racists are the first ones to accuse others as racists.

Did you guys know that Tom Clancy is currently married to Colin Powell's (a famous black politician's) neice.

Also, did you know that in the novel AND the movie "Patriot Games" Jack Ryan and his closest friends killed IRISH (caucasian, mind you!) terrorists serving the Irish Republican Army?

So judging by the ignorance here, and the fact that it takes one to know one, who are the REAL racists in this forum?

Go Scorpio. I agree. You kicked some ass in your rebuttal. If he is a racist it doesn't show in his books, except for those who over analyze, and his books are great.

PS: I'm reading Patriot Games right now. It's pretty good so far. I bet that shoulder wound hurt.

I agree with Scorpio. In his Jack Ryan series:

Ryan's bestfriend is Black and a Rear Admiral

Jack Clark's son-in-law and spec ops protoge is a Latino from South LA

The Soviet Leadership always has "moderate" Pro-West politicians and Generals

I stopped reading Clancy sometime in the mid-90s, not because he was racist, but because he such a predictable writer. He has a great imagination, and a solid understanding of the Beltway Intel organizations, but as a writer he just became a bit too tedious. I never read any of his techno-spy thrillers, so I cannot comment about them. I would have to say Cardinal of the Kremlin and Clear and Present Danger were my favorites.

BTW, Clancy was/is a big critic of both Gulf Wars as well as the WOT. It would be hard to call him a war monger.

Have you also considered the company who makes the game. The game's company alters the story to make it seem more interesting to the player, just like they do with movies. I'll have to disagree with you there, Tom Clancy isn't racist.

I don't know about being a "racist," but I do know his view of Africa isn't very shiny.

I'm reading "Executive Order" at the moment. The amount of negative crap about Africa is amazing. Yes...all the opinions are those voiced by fictitious characters. Yes, he throws Africa a bone from time to time regarding the effects of colonialism. However, reading this book would certainly make me think twice about moving there. Disturbing, since my wife is from Uganda and we're now building a home outside Kampala.

Still, maybe he has something nice to say about this continent in second half of the book?

He's married to Powell's niece, but he'd probably rather be married to Colin himself. Likely a side effect of years of heavy military research for his novels.

Clancy merely wrote what American military and intelligence people thought and talked about during the time. Jack Ryan's best friend and Vice President was Robby Jackson, a black Admiral. As was Admiral Greer. Where's the racism?

"The first to accuse others of being racists are racists"? Where did you hear that from?

I "heard" otherwise.

To incriminate one or more kinds or people and point the other as the hosting proud honorable ones is demonetization which in many Zeno-phobic exaggerated fears is pure ignorance and stereotype in order to bring a negative perception and deceive the masses like Adolf Hitler who we all know was responsible for a holocaust and if you can't accept that truth you are more than likely a defensive dismiss er or evidence of proving people to be wrong for being racist thus proves my point for those of you who don't like this your a ethnocentric insecure bigot who just cannot accept the sweet words of freedom. Screw Tom Clancy you darn xenophobic Nazis!

How can you say he's racist ? Its already been said but Jack Ryans best friend and vice president is black. John Kelly's daughter is married to a latino. One of Mary Pat Foleys favorite agents is chinese. Shit, Rainbow is made up of a bunch of nationalities. Thats why its called Rainbow. It seems to me that people read just a couple chapters of one book and decided he was racist. "That" seems pretty ignorant to me.

Are the racist thoughts of Clancy's characters merely a fictitious embellishment designed to paint a better picture of a character -

Or do some of Clancy's beliefs leak through onto the page?

As a writer with a degree to back up his know-how, I can say this much - when I create a meaningful character, it can be difficult not to let a bit of me appear in his mannerisms, dialogue, thoughts, actions, etc.

I have read a lot of Clancy. I wish I had a nickel every time he-I mean his character- described Asians as "Those little yellow slant-eyed bastards."

Clancy may not go down too much on certain ethnities (e.g Blacks), but he does get really racist on others, like Asians, in particular.Just because he's married to Colin Powell's niece (if that is true), or just because he may portray certain ethnicities in a better light than others, that DOES NOT mean he is not racist, if and whenevern he chooses to specially target any races, or stereotype them.
