The problem is that all the well-paying jobs in the city are government jobs, paid for by taxpayers.

What City are we talking about? Are you remembering the thousands of people who commute into the City every day from Manchester, York, Springettsbury Townships to work at the offices and business in the City? Maybe the City doesn't have alot of manufacturing/industrial jobs, but it certainly has its share of private-entity, white collar workers.

The best way to save the city is to get rid of O'Rourke. Seems the man is always caught blindsided by expenses that anyone with an ounce of common sense could see. Mayors come and go but this fool is kept around.

"The geographic area has a "pretty vibrant economy," with plenty of well-paying jobs, though the job holders don't live there." That speaks alot for itself.

So all the possible solutions are tax increases? No possible way we can reduce costs anywhere?

Wouldn't it be a more fair world if guaranteed pensions were declared illegal? I know mine took a hit. Why should I be taxed more to make up for theirs?

Like excityresident said get rid of the unions wages and pensions. Most of working america does not get pensions. We have to save our own money through 401k's, ira's etc. Granted most of them are not going really well right now because of the economy.

Most government projects would cost much less than what they do because of paying union rates.

Outsource the Fire Dept like many other Cities are doing. Cut back to 5 Ass't Chiefs instead of 7. Cut LT's from 8 to 5. Cut the overtime.
