US lead in danger? Nobels tell a different story

After cleaning up in the Nobel science prizes, the United States on Friday scored another coup: the peace prize for a president less than nine months in office.

This prize is no more significant than if it were found in a box of Cracker Jacks.

I hope at least the other eight deserved their awards, No wonder their are so many "Ollie" and "Lena" jokes.

The premise of this article is ridiculously flawed. The science and economics Nobel prizes are a totally trailing indicator of research prowess, as they are usually awarded for work done between 20 and 35 years previously. Yes, the US had a premier science funding environment in the 70's and 80's. And that's what the Nobel prizes (aside from Obama's) tell us. And NOTHING more.
