I've never understood why straight laced has such a bad connotation. I remember a number of years back when Don Knotts said he could not wait to get out from the goody two shoes reputation of Barney Fife (and do what, I asked myself?) They want to break all the rules and be like almost everyone else. I, for one hate that way of thinking. I'd like to think that we have some good (straight laced), do-the-right-thing, people in society but I really doubt it.
