It's a decent fair but not worth $15 per person.

Glad to hear Farley was elated. After spending 1.5 hours sitting in the parking lot (without moving) trying to get out after the fireworks, chatting with a parkng attendant and being informed that it would be another 1-2 hours before I could get out of the "VIP" lot, I walked down the street and got a cab. What a mess. I will NEVER go to the Marin county fair again. Whoever set up the parking and the exit strategy is a moron.

I took my 4 year old son to the fair yesterday and I have to say we had a magical time together. It was so much more clean, easy to navigate and fun than I imagined.$15 doesn't seem like too much to me considering it included all the rides, a horse show, a music concert and a dance show and if we would have had the energy an acrobat show. That is a lot of fun for the money. I think they did a really good job and it gave my son great memories of his first fair - and me too!

ROTFLMAO! Well, it might have been a fun time, but consider this: Three out of the Four Tops are DEAD. Only one is left. Same with the Temptations. Only one of the original Temptations is still performing. The fair's selling a show featuring the "Four Tops" and "The Temptations" is sort of like selling a show featuring "The Beatles" comprised of Peter Best and three nobodies.

2008 was the best fair ever as far as musical line-ups go: Joan Jett, WAR, America, Tommy Castro, and Los Lobos. I will never forget seeing America play "Ventura Highway" there. Classic summertime Americana with my family.

I've been going to the fair since I was a kid and now take my kids. You can't beat the Marin Fair for safety, cleanliness, great exhibits, and free rides and entertainment. If you really see all there is to see, I don't know how anyone could possibly complain that $15 is too much, especially when you consider how much one pays to see a movie nowadays!

I say GREAT JOB, Farley!

And never, ever, plan to leave right after the fireworks. There is only so much they can do to move that many cars out of the area on a 2 lane road.

The article mentions a drop of 7000 attendees vs. last year, and acknowledges the higher ticket price. If they had kept the ticket prices equal to last year, perhaps wouldn't have dropped and the revenues could have been MORE? In marketing terms, I believe it's called "price elasticity" .. the higher the cost, the fewer units one sells. Here's a recommendation: Create a 2 tier price structure - "regular" admission and "deluxe"...the higher priced tickets will include all the rides. The deluxe ticket holders could be differentiated with one of those little plastic wristbands like they use at places like Great America. It's hard to justify a $15 entrance fee to just look at the exhibits, and have the opportunity to pay $4.50 for an ear of BBQ corn.

The best way to see the fair......don't go in. Park you car at the Mall, walk over and sit on the lawn outside the fair and listen to the music and watch the 20 foot high "fireworks". The last time I went to the fair I was in the middle of two gangs, one black one hispanic, who were going to fight. Not the fair I grew up with or remember. I remember when it cost $6 to get in, and that was expensive.

Suggest next year they expand the area for music... We were stuck behind the crowd trying to get to the island/tent. Not much fun unless you have kids for the rides. Only 3 of the 4 tops started the show @ 6:30... Have seen some great stars perform in past and always had a seat or could stand near the tent.

Yeah, pretty expensive outing PLUS we sat in the civic center parking area for an hour before we could ever move to the roadway! even the cops were stuck in traffic. They even ran out of parking tickets -- why not comp people for showing up? You already made your money! sorry folks, see you in a few years when you've figured out the logistics.

You sound like one of these morons that will vote to increase taxes and costs on anything because "it's only $10" or "only $49".
I think the bad economy helped the fair. People had no money to go anywhere so they stayed home. The fair was their big splurge.

The Marin County Fair host the BEST FIREWORKS SHOW E V E R !!!! I can't say this enough. I have been to many fireworks displays throughout California and the East Coast. I usually tell everyone who says they are not staying for the fireworks because of the traffic mess that it is so worth it!! I suggest they walk through the carnival to kill some time and let the traffic thin out for a while. This year i preached the same canned pitch as years previous. Since Monday night there were so many folks that have never even been to this fair or have had the privilege to enjoy the fireworks display, It seemed everyone around me had said they have seen the best firework display elsewhere.......... until....The Marin County Fireworks Show began. The comments were that of amazement, the oohs and Ahhs never stopped. You kept hearing oh this must be the finale, but I knew better. Not only are the Fireworks Spectacular they go on forever, probably a good 20 minutes at least. I just want to say that the comments after the show were "This is the best show, I have ever seen anywhere!!!" "Well worth sitting in traffic for" Who ever does this show does an outstanding job year after year & I want to thank you for continuing to make my 4th of July experience the best ever.

The "One Top" and the "Temptation"? And not the star of either group? Just another pair of carney acts -- should have been down by the rides instead of on the main stage. Gonna dust off my old LPs for for some sweet soul music.
Welfare Tickets

It's my understanding that welfare recipients receive free tickets for the fair and for their children.

As the IJ reported yesterday: 50% of COM students receive tuition waivers -- you'll understand why the tickets are so high: you're subsidizing the welfare class.
