Mandate pushed Postal Service into the red for first quarter

Feb 9, 2013 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: The Washington Post

The U.S. Postal Service lost $1.3 billion during the first quarter, but it could have turned a $100 million profit if not for a congressional mandate that officials have long blamed for stifling post office finances, according to the agency's first-quarter financial statement .

The president of the American Federation of Government Employees says a one-percent increase is "absolutely unconscionable."
The head of the largest federal employee union said Saturday that President Obama'sproposal to increase pay for federal employees by 1 percent was "absolutely unconscionable" and "simply not enough."
"It is not enough to allow federal employees to make up lost ground from two-plus years of frozen pay

Still trying to compare military service with delivering the mail?

The difference is the military ARE government employees so of course our pensions are funded by the taxpayers.

The Post Office keeps claiming no taxpayer money goes to support them and their employees are not civil service employees. If they don't want the federal govt dictating how their pension is funded, then they can't be taking taxpayer money when they come up short.

Not first class you cant'; only express mail, which is why it costs about $6.

In fact, by federal law they HAVE to charge AT LEAST $3 for express mail.

Repeal the federal monopoly laws and let's see what the free market will come up with. If FedEx & UPS & others can't compete then the Post Office has nothing to worry about.

You volunteered right??? Work is work. Being a mailman is not easy work. And yes they do risk there lives. I serevd 8 years in the military...Doesnt mean I should be treated any different then anyone else. Your not special for serving in the military. Now back when people were drafted those people were special.

AND IF THE PENTAGON DID NOT TAKE 5 BILLION A YERA FROM POST OFFICE THEY WOULD BE IN GREAT SHAPE. But like every single budget gets money taken from it and rolled into BLOATED military budget.

"2. The postal service doesn’t rely on taxpayer funds.

Until 1971, mail delivery was handled by the Post Office Department, a Cabinet department in the federal government. Postal worker strikes prompted President Nixon to pass the Postal Reorganization Act in 1971, transforming it into the semi-independent agency we now know as the United States Postal Service. The USPS in its current form runs like a business, relies on postage for revenue and, for the most part, has not used taxpayer money since 1982, when postage stamps became “products” instead of forms of taxation. Taxpayer money is only used in some cases to pay for mailing voter materials to disabled and overseas Americans.

USPS spokespersons have been adamant in emphasizing that they are not requesting taxpayer funds from the federal government to make this year’s payment. Rather, they say, the USPS is asking Congress to authorize access to an estimated $7 billion that they overpaid into the future retiree pension fund in previous years."

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/five-thi...

"The USPS has not directly received taxpayer-dollars since the early 1980s with the minor exception of subsidies for costs associated with the disabled and overseas voters. Since the 2006 all-time peak mail volume,[6] after which Congress passed the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act",[7](which mandated $5.5 billion per year to be paid into an account to pre-fund retiree health-care, 75 years into the future, a requirement unique among organizations and businesses in the U.S.[8]), revenue dropped sharply due to recession-influenced[9] declining mail volume,[10] prompting the postal service to look to other sources of revenue while cutting costs to reduce its budget deficit.[11"

And they have not. As of 2011, the USPS would have generated a 1 billion dollar profit - had the 2006 law not been imposed upon them.

" Operationally speaking, the USPS nets profits every year. The financial problem it faces now comes from a 2006 Congressional mandate that requires the agency to “pre-pay” into a fund that covers health care costs for future retired employees. Under the mandate, the USPS is required to make an annual $5.5 billion payment over ten years, through 2016. These “prepayments” are largely responsible for the USPS’s financial losses over the past four years and the threat of shutdown that looms ahead – take the retirement fund out of the equation, and the postal service would have actually netted $1 billion in profits over this period."

Oh yeah, fighting off a chihuahua is the same as fighting on the front lines in Afghanistan. I can't believe any veteran would make that ridiculous argument.

Yes, I think everyone who served in the military is special, even you.

Btw, there is a certain irony in your argument seeing how the post office gives preferential hiring to veterans.

If they're so profitable then get rid of their federally guaranteed monopoly; then we'll see how profitable they are.

Obama returns to campaign mode, visiting three cities after State of Union speech

President Obama will travel after his State of the Union address Tuesday night to three U.S. cities to discuss proposals in the speech that focused on “strengthening the economy for the middle class and those striving to get there,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Sunday in a statement.
