Tyler Perry Beat The Odds As Black Studio Owner

There are 18 comments on the www.cnn.com story from Jul 24, 2009, titled Tyler Perry Beat The Odds As Black Studio Owner. In it, www.cnn.com reports that:

Tyler Perry is known today as the first African-American to own a major film and TV studio.

Though he was largely unknown to white audiences, Perry refused to play by Hollywood's rules and demanded creative control of his projects.

He was resigned to bankrolling the project himself and selling it as a DVD when he got a call from the independent studio Lionsgate. They struck a deal and he made "Diary" for about $5 million. The movie earned 10 times that at the box office.

Since then, Perry's movies have grossed nearly $400 million and he's developed a loyal following. He now demands not only creative control but also ownership of the finished product.

Tyler Perry Studios, on 30 acres in Atlanta, is his black Hollywood.

all Tyler Peryy does is reinforce black stereotypes. none of his movies are innovative or thought provoking. I ACTUALLY sat in the theater and watched "why did I get married "with my ex and predicted the entire movie. Any black people that think he is progressing us with this crap , probably also thinks soulja boy is hip hop. I live in the south, and grew up in brooklyn. People in the south really need to catch up mentally.

The actors and actresses that he picks can not act worth a spill of beans. Its really painful to watch house of payne because the actors are dispicable at acting. He needs to recruit better actors and actresses and come up with better scripts and better lighting and filming techniques.

Not a big fan of his movies but I am a big fan of someone working against the odds and making a good go of it. Kudos for Tyler.

I would have to agree with you on this. I was just telling a friend last night that I'm sick of the faith having black women in his movies always stuggling paying the bills, taking care of the kids, settling for second and third place with men, baby momma drama scenes, job to job, zero stability, loud mouthed, desparate, coonery acting and the list just goes on.

It won't be long before he starts throwing in bi-sexual men and women scenes, hell he already has them as actors, who does he think he's foolong.

I use to like T.Perry but the more and more I see his movies stepping over the opportunity to portray the real positive aspect of our black people, it just let's me and others that see what I see know that even when black people such as Perry get into the position turn things around, they won't.

But is'nt it great Myst...to see story lines about us. I mean, issues that we deal with on a everyday basis. It's hard to find movies with black people who are predominately, in them.

Yeah, but every minority comedian since the beginning of time has faced a similar charge.

They can't help it though because comedy is about human foibles, NOT human heroics.
