My first thought is boy that guy looks like a nerd. But what was I expecting him to look like? A hippie? Of course they would not hire a hippie. He would be stoned all the time and not be able to get it together enough to put this whole museum together. This guy has what it takes I guess. A degree and a love of the music. I just wish they would hire me to help him sort through it all. Man, what a lucky bastard he is. He is flying. Who needs drugs when you get a job offer like this. Once in a life time deal and he gets it. Congratulations dude.

This was discussed previously and the cost is covered by a private grant or bequest.
No actually, the Senile's crack reporter Red Diper Baby Doper Baine did not provide any mention of the funding source. Any program funded by a grant from either a Federal Grant program or most Non Profit groups are usually funded by the taxpayers! And if you wern't aware, the UC system is in financial decline what with millions being cut! But the Red Diper Baby Doper Libs are up protesting the loss of sacred Liberal Indoctrination courses such as the Community Aggitation course recently cut and increased tuition to support the Socialist Professors who most have never worked a day in the private free market system. They done been sucking at the public taxpayer teets their entire careers! Isn't the entitlement attitude so prevelant in our Secular drug idled Liberal Society great? Yea baby! Sex, drugs and rock and roll!

As has been previously stated, the money for this comes from a private bequest. It has nothing to do with the University or Library. They are housing it, not paying for it.
As for how the guy looks..come on. There are so many Deadheads in high end jobs, especially in Silicon Valley. You don't get a job of this calibur by showing up in tie dye, burkenstocks, and smelling like patchouli. The Grateful Dead entrusted this collection to UCSC because they knew it would be handled with respect. I'm pretty sure he doesn't dress like that when he actually goes to a show.
No credence in the alleged funding source yet as I have not read any factually verifiable sources! And even if it is a private funded bequest, housing it in a taxpayer funded building is use of taxpayer money and I say toss it up to the Frisco folks to house and subsidize!

During the 80's and 90's, the Dead ran some of the biggest grossing tours of any musical act, period.

The salary is in excess of what many tenure-track and tenured faculty make, with far more stringent degree requirements.
If UCSC is hell-bent on getting the California State Legislature to shut it down, this is just the sort of publicity needed.
I was a Grateful Dead fan, but this is inexcusable during this financial crisis, even if the salary is coming from a separate pot of money.

AARRGGHHH! Students could have archived this collection! WHY WHY WHY can't UCSC hire someone to make sensible decisions. The money they waste is a crime.

OUTRAGEOUS!
Fire all the people who approved this - use their salaries to provide more classes for students who want to LEARN SOMETHING THAT HELPS OUR CITIZENS AND OUR COUNTRY.
Enough of this stupidity!
YES!!!!! Let the students volunteer to archive this collection - ridiculous!!!!!!!!

I just got a $1088 paycheck for teaching a quarter-length 2-unit class. Talk about poverty - and I have been with the college for almost 10 years.
This ticks us all off.
And by the way, I have better hair and glasses than THAT guy.

1985? South Carolina? Pleeeeez! The guy's no deadhead. Deadheads are from the 1960s AND from the Bay Area. He's a fake and a phony.

I must say, some of the most judgmental people I ever met were jerky rich-kid Deadheads trying too hard.
This guy sounds like he knows what he's talking about and also managed to become a successful motivated professional. I don't really see librarians as sell-outs or "the man" or anything.
Ain't no time to hate.

Well, it looks like the disbelievers are out in force on this one. With all the worthy social institutions to study and with their attendant problems, why did the University select this worthless task? Who really cares about a bunch of clever song writers and drug users? What legacy do they leave behind? Thousands of ruined lives and wasted dreams and ambitions flushed with the residue of from their drugs. What colossal conceit! Such a pity to waste one's talent on this garbage when so many other problems need study and fixing. I'll drink to that!

This enshrinement of the Grated Dead with all the attendant publicity is further evidence of the decline of academic excellence on this campus. The University will do anything for money. The glorification of drug use and narcissism is what this "culture" is about, thus further reinforcing Santa Cruz's negative image. I won't be leaving my legacy to this institution!

The guy got this job because he is the antithesis of what a dead head looks like. He is respectable and as time goes on that is what these jaded fools want. They want to rehabilitate themselves so they can be presented in a historical context as the preservers of culture. They were authentic, no doubt, but so is the Mexican drug cartel. Think about it? We're paying the price today for the sins of our fathers.

Does this mean the Merriwether Post Pavillion Shows will feature prominently in the archive? Just for ritual sake, I'd say he should burn one in his office on his first day.

To begin with, the man newly hired to oversee the archive has extensive experience in the archivist arts, with a master's degree in library science from the University of South Carolina and five years as an oral historian at that university's South Caroliniana Library.
Secondly -- and this one is a bit more difficult to measure academically -- Meriwether is a true-blue Deadhead."...
Is this a late April Fools Day joke article? The budget deficit UC system isn't really hiring a new administrative salaried position to manage and instill a Dead Rock and Roll druggie band is it? Oh!...My!...GOD! And folks wonder why the public is angry with the out of control spending by Liberal Democrats!
