you can't deny that The Dead had a great influence on music and culture. While you may disagree on wether the influence was psitive, it still warrant studying. If the study of history is left to only those things we agree with, we will all be reading texas schoolbooks. And that, is not a good thing.

This enshrinement of the Grated Dead with all the attendant publicity is further evidence of the decline of academic excellence on this campus. The University will do anything for money. The glorification of drug use and narcissism is what this "culture" is about, thus further reinforcing Santa Cruz's negative image. I won't be leaving my legacy to this institution!

..."There are but two primary requirements for any candidate who wants to manage UC Santa Cruz's yet-to-be-opened Grateful Dead Archive. And, on the face of it, Nicholas Meriwether qualifies on both counts. To begin with, the man newly hired to oversee the archive has extensive experience in the archivist arts, with a master's degree in library science from the University of South Carolina and five years as an oral historian at that university's South Caroliniana Library. Secondly -- and this one is a bit more difficult to measure academically -- Meriwether is a true-blue Deadhead."... Is this a late April Fools Day joke article? The budget deficit UC system isn't really hiring a new administrative salaried position to manage and instill a Dead Rock and Roll druggie band is it? Oh!...My!...GOD! And folks wonder why the public is angry with the out of control spending by Liberal Democrats!

[Dude, I can like, totally narrow down the time frame when I saw my first Dead concert to like, 10 years, I know for sure it was like some time between 1980 and 1990...] Boy, for a library historian who loves the Dead, why cant he remember when he first saw them ???? These archives are going to be interesting! Also, there goes another local job to someone from out of state! WTF ! UCSC was advertising this job for between about 6-9,000/month ! Wow, thats (for those who are mathmatically challenged) 72-108,000 a year! This whole thing stinks like a deadhead who has been on tour for too long ! No amount of patchouli will cover this one up.

We're going let the world economy's run totally out of control and darn near banrupt the world...wait, that's already been done. Darn those teabaggers get all the good ideas!

I won't be leaving my legacy to this institution! The only thing right about your statement is that sadly, yes, the University will do anything for money. But not in the way you say. The UC system is selling its soul to the corporate interests who now steer the agenda. Because they have the money, and state contributions to the UC system have dropped 50 percent over the last two decades. As for your legacy, I suppose they'll get along fine without your collection of Orange Nehi bottle-caps and stained Playboy magazines.

As has been previously stated, the money for this comes from a private bequest. It has nothing to do with the University or Library. They are housing it, not paying for it. As for how the guy looks..come on. There are so many Deadheads in high end jobs, especially in Silicon Valley. You don't get a job of this calibur by showing up in tie dye, burkenstocks, and smelling like patchouli. The Grateful Dead entrusted this collection to UCSC because they knew it would be handled with respect. I'm pretty sure he doesn't dress like that when he actually goes to a show.

Amazing how the school has to cut classes and raise fees - but USES TAXPAYER'S MONEY to pay for this! OUTRAGEOUS! Fire all the people who approved this - use their salaries to provide more classes for students who want to LEARN SOMETHING THAT HELPS OUR CITIZENS AND OUR COUNTRY. Enough of this stupidity!
