Love for the Grateful Dead unites father, son

Full story: Marin Independent Journal

The Grateful Dead and their various offshoot rock bands have been credited with bringing people together with their mesmerizing music for almost 45 years, but the way Tom Pope and Jafar Thorne connected has to be an exceptionally rare case.

I was also at the house of Jennifer's friend, Karen Schirmer the day that she insisted we look at our Senior Year Book to compare Tom's face to Jafar's. It was undenial. So glad this turned out as "weird and wonderful" for both Tom Pope and Jafar Thorne as it did. To many good years to come!!

I am a major Dead fan from back in the day from Brooklyn, New York. Very sad that the remaining members of the 'Dead" have disgraced Garcia's memory and wishes over the years (too many to count!) and have also decided to endorse (and go against Garcia's wishes of supporting a political candidate) to support that great deceiver - Obama - Regarless of your political views - the man is a failure!!!

I respectfully disagree. I'm quite sure they all got together and collectively agreed that this time around it was simply too important and they opted to not "sit back" and watch the Republicans steal another election. I don't think that's disgracing Garcia's memory to speak up when it matters. Yes, the GD was notorious for not getting political. I respect(ed) that but desperate times call for desperate measures and after 8 years of Bush, it was time to speak up.

Jerry was notorious for "not wanting to get involved". He was THE MOST conflict adverse person in the band and THAT contributed to a number of decisions that the band made. Right or wrong, no one wanted to upset Jerry...that's very well known but that doesn't mean that the others didn't/don't have opinions. They had to do something in 2008 and THANK GOD they did. Hell, look at our options. Palin? Really?! Anyway, I shouldn't have bitten the bait. This was once a nice article about a family reunion. I'm sorry it turned political but I couldn't let that comment sit.

While it is a awesome the two finally hooked up, and they have so much in common to go over now - the story has a sad backdrop of missed opportunity for a father and son, and a misguided journey of the biological parents hiding this from their son and themselves.
I think Baby Boomer types tend to gloss over things in a world of some denial.
Yo dude, you certainly make some harsh assumptions. I happen to know these people and no one was in denial or hiding anything from anyone. Misguided journey? How insulting No: mistake of youth discovered too late, people gone in different directions - missed opportunity? Yes, of course. But today they feel jubilant. The "sad" part is your misguided interpretation.

Having been there as one of the two involved I can assure you that(A)It was not a one night stand and(B)there were no drugs involved.
However, some like your version better.

total libtard story. Mother sleeps around, no idea who the father is and then the IJ writes about it. Undoubtedly drugs were likely involved at conception.
What a sick, sick, story!
If you think this is a good story, then you have the mental disorder with no known cure called Liberalism.

So glad that you did not bring your bad vibes to the shows...
Shaking in the forest, what have you to fear?
Here there may be tigers, to punch you in the ear.
With gloves of stainless steel, bats carved out of bricks
Knock you down and beat you up and give your ass a kick.
When push comes to shove, you're afraid of love.

Shaking in the desert, now wherefore do you cry?
Here there may be rattlesnakes, to punch you in the eye.
With Shotgun's full of silver and bullet's made of glass
String barbed wire at your feet, that will not let you pass.
When push comes to shove, you're afraid of love.

When push comes to shove, when push comes to shove,
You're afraid of love, when push comes to shove.

Shaking in the bedroom, covers on your head,
Are you still in fear of the hand beneath the bed?
Grabbing at the handle, scratching at the door,
Maybe it's mystery killer you saw on channel four.
When push comes to shove, you're afraid of love.

Shaking in the garden, the fear within you grows,
Here there may be roses, to punch you in the nose.
Put my arms around you, love you til you cry,
Wrap you in your sweet perfume and squeeze you 'til you die.
When push comes to shove, you're afraid of love.

When push comes to shove, when push comes to shove,
You're afraid of love, when push comes to shove.

I cannot tell you how happy this makes me. I am a San Anselmo resident (and eternal Deadhead) who has lately been too depressed to listen to the Dead or any other music. But I remember what joy the Dead gave me live, manny times (tho' alas, never in Calif.) and in all the tapes I have and this is just good stuff. I wish nothing but the best for 'y'all."
Remember: It's a very long time to be gone, but a very short time to be here--or there (with my bad hearing I was never sure which). Anyhoo, make the most of the time you have. Peace, Jill
Get over it, try listening to John Coltrane, from about 1961 to 1965 - Afro Blue, Impressions,Spiritual, Lonnie's Lament, A Love Supreme, Sun Ship, Wise One, and much more.
