Wow, not surprising to see that the Mountain State Fair is still keeping up with it's tradition of half assed, no name entertainment. As you can plainly see, theres no need to hurry on over there for this years line up. YAWN.

Cherryholmes has "continued to receive many industry nominations and awards -- including a Grammy nomination in 2006 for their first commercial release 'Cherryholmes'. Their second release on Skaggs Family Records 'Cherryholmes ll' will be available in June 2007. Cherryholmes have also become regular performers on the historic Grand Ole Opry."

My bad, you are absolutely right, Cherry Holmes is indeed a decent bluegrass band. Since I'm not up on my "bluegrass" trivia that slipped by me. On that subject tho, is a bluegrass band REALLy a huge draw for a fair? Even in this area bluegrass fan bases have dwindled consistantly over the years. I grew up with it, and I could make it about 3 songs worth before I'd be hunting a funnel cake.

It is my observation that interest in bluegrass in this area has not dwindled. It may have morphed in a number of different directions but all the affairs I've attended have been fully booked. We have some fine local bands that are outstanding performers and song writers as well. Three of the finest are the Steep Canyon Rangers
http://www.steepcanyon.com/asp/scrhome2.asp , the Biscuit Burners http://www.thebiscuitburners.com/ and the greasy Beans http://www.greasybeans.com/

A new festival showed up just last fall. Called the Mountain song Fest, it's first edition featured Doc Watson and David Holt. This years edition features the Del McCourey Band, The Peter Rowan and Tony rice Quartet and the Steep Canyon Rangers. This festival is held at the Brevard Music Center in September. http://www.mountainsongfestival.com/

Every year for many years now, Merlefest has been a huge success featuring many of the finest musicians from around the nation including Alison Krauss and Union Station (AKUS).

Right here in Asheville, Shindig on the Green attracts a large crowd who come to hear less well known bands mostly composed of fine musicians from around the area and adjoining states.

No sir, I do not believe bluegrass is in any danger of losing audiences, not here, not around the nation. There are a multitude of major festivals from coast to coast that are widely attended. They include NC's own Merlefest, Telluride and the Grey Fox bluegrass festival in NY to name just three.

Oh Boy, you do not care for the genre, that is clear from your post, but your bias does not prove that bluegrass is in any way fading from view, quite the opposite I would say.

Regarding the demise of bluegrass, attended the opening concert of the season at Brevard Music Center last night. The place was nearly filled to capacity with a very enthusiastic audience listening to our very own Steep Canyon Rangers who have, by the way, played at the Grand Ole Opry recently and have just returned from a trip to the Yukon Territory.

Three of these guys make their home in Asheville and the other two in Brevard. Suffice to say, anybody in attendance last night would not say bluegrass is on the wan.
