Mr. Harrop,
You’re completely missing the point. Jim had almost 8 months to move into the District from the time he announced until he filed. He is trying to claim that buying land with the intent of moving there someday establishes residency. It simple doe not meet the intent of the law. He, after taking an oath to the Constitution of the State of California, signed his Declaration of Candidacy stating that Gerber was his residence…yet it is now being reported in several news reports that he is admitting that his real residence was Woodland. The real shame in all of this is that had Jim filed for the 8th Assembly seat (which Woodland is a part of) he had a good shot of changing a seat held by the Democrats to Republican....then he would have been a real hero! But instead, he filed for a seat in a district that he did not live in. I spoke with Dudley Holeman, former Mayor of Woodland and one of Jim's supporters, and ask how Jim was going to change his residency last July. Dudley told me that Jim said he was considering a move to Wild-Wings estates near Woodland ($800,000 homes like where Jim currently lives), and Wild-Wings is in the 2nd Assembly District. I said...fair enough...meets the requirement. Yet Jim would now have us believe that he decided to move to Gerber last spring and move his family into a mobile home. Now in all honesty, do you really believe Jim would do that? The case is not one of Carpetbagger, the situation is one of a candidate not qualifying for the ballet when he filed. Jim is a great guy and I have known him for quite a while and you are correct on his vast experience. However, Jim has made a critical mistake and did not establish residency, which makes him ineligible for the ballot. I think Jim will be the first to tell you the laws of this state must be followed, therefore he needs to withdraw.
