If you want to read a point-by-point rebuttal of Rick Santorum's anti-gay-marriage platform, look no further than Conor Friedersdorf's piece in today's Atlantic.
Among other things, Friedersdorf skewers Santorum for ignoring inconvenient historical facts:
"Marriage is, and has always been through human history, a union of a man and woman," [Santorum] writes, neglecting to mention the times when it has been the unions of a man and various women..."
"And did human history end in April 2001? That's when the Netherlands legalized gay marriage. Today gay marriage is legal in 10 countries."Friedersdorf thinks social conservatives like Santorum are losing the debate - "and the support of America's next generation of voters."
Weigh in: Does Friedersdorf have it right - are gay marriage's opponents losing the debate?

Traditional marriage is an age old institution, it doesn't need a vote, but for those who would prefer same sex marriages, it will need a vote under the present discrimination it faces.

I think that is what most anti gay forces want, but when you consider the changing trends, it's possible their push for "let the people vote" may blow up in their faces.
When that happens I'm sure we'll see a big turn around in the whole "activist liberal judges " claim and they will be running to the courts to try to stop it.

Just as past discriminations were finally stopped by federal law, discrimination against homosexuals should be stopped. Remember a majority wanted segregation to continue in the South, so taking that as a guideline maybe the vote is a bad idea, like you said, it could blow up in gay marriage proponents faces.
Marriage between different races were condemned in America for a majority of its history up until 1967, so it might just take some time to get same sex marriages legitimized.
