The other day I had my iPod on shuffle, and for some odd coincidence five songs by George Harrison came on in a row.

Nice piece.
The Beatles, as songwriters , certainly have been dissected comprehensively over the years.
I think the most obvious quality of George is his honesty. This, in a positive light, is sincerity but in a negative context can be quite abrasive. This perhaps explains a bit more about George the man. He could be mostly humble and sincere but he also could come across as terse, tough and not one to suffer fools. He was complex.
I do agree that a lot of his Beatles songs were a bit on the irritable side. This could be papered over by the fact that his 2 most famous Beatles songs, Here Comes the Sun and Something were hugely uplifting numbers.
I also would argue that a lot of his solo songs were generally positive songs but could at times be a little preachy. I think his solo records from 33 1/3 and George Harrison were a man who wasn't so much irritated but probably more at peace with himself. This was probably a time when he was more settled in his private life with Olivia.
While being quite a private man he could wear his heart on his sleeve through his music. This perhaps could be the significant difference between he and Paul McCartney who perhaps wasn't so autobiographical. Dark Horse and Extra Texture were sad type albums where George was able to let his emotions out in the studio after a fairly difficult seperation. So sad and Simply Shady being the obvious examples here. I could really go on and on here but I won't . I will say ,however, that George has given me a lot of joy over the years. To me his music is real. He may not have the best voice but there is a vulnerability in it that when combined with strong lyrics really cuts through for me. His demos perhaps shine the best light on his power as a songwriter.

Cheers
