In November I am publishing my book 'BEACH BOYS vs BEATLEMANIA: Rediscovering Sixties Music', author G A De Forest. Of course, the Beach Boys win. It is 400-plus pages, nonfiction, covering the two groups' head to head battle and much more as background context up to 1970, and will be available by mid-November from Booklocker.com as a print on demand paperback (US$19.95) or download copy (US$8.95). Here in one book for the first time, the two greatest groups of the Sixties. Greetings from New Zealand, and Happy Reading one and all.

I'm just finishing up "Beach Boys vs Beatlemania" and I'm a bit confused. It's non-fiction, right? Everyone's entitled to his or her opinion, but imho, as a Beatlefan of the highest order for more than forty years, much of Mr. DeForest's opinions are quite comical. I'm not putting down the Beach Boys...I quite like many of their hits and have seen them in concert a couple of times. But really...page after page of "the Beach Boys could do no wrong, and they were held back by their record company...etc etc etc" alongside "the Beatles were lucky, wrote tuneless boring songs that only made it as hits because of the contributions of George Martin...etc etc etc". Man, it gets old quickly if you let it bother you. If you're able to laugh along with it, the book is actually quite interesting and pleasurable, especially if Sixties' music is the soundtrack of your life. Mr. Deforest writes in an interesting style and has tons of facts and figures to pique your interest. But if you're a Beatles fan, be forewarned: There's a lot of Beatle bashing in the waters ahead!

Hi G. E.-- Just got notice of your comment, some six years late. You're right, it is a very tired subject by now -- but I can't resist a couple of points just to (partially) set the record straight: The comical part is you putting quotes around your own words as if they're mine. Nowhere in the book do I say the Beatles songs are "boring" (though some are repetitive) and especially not "tuneless" -- In fact they were so very tuneful because their backgrounds were inescapably wedded to the traditions of English music hall, which was nothing, and I mean nothing, without its tunes. Also, I list more than several instances where the Beach Boys did "do wrong" -- in their music, as well as in their private lives and business/image decisions.
