Mike Love inspired Back in the U.S.S.R. ?

I was in India at the Maharishi’s place and Paul McCartney came to the breakfast table with his acoustic guitar and said, “Hey, listen to this, Mike "Flew in to Miami Beach B.O.A.C. …” and all that. He sang me the verses of “Back in the USSR” and I said to him, “Paul, you ought to talk about all the girls around Russia – Moscow girls, Ukraine girls, Georgia on my mind…” and he did. He did the entire music thing, and I just gave him the idea for that – for the bridge. The next time I heard it was when it was out on the “White Album”. But I guess my being there influenced him in the Beach Boys way. [laughs] We’ve even done “Back in the USSR” on stage because it’s fun to do; it’s sort of like “Fun, Fun, Fun” only with different lyrics, you know?

The Beach Boys' hit song "Surfin' U.S.A." is set to the melody of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen," but Chuck Berry was never given credit.

I never thought Back in the U.S.S.R. sounded like Fun,Fun,Fun.

The Beach Boys have created some timeless music, Pet Sounds is a work of genious.

Yeah, the line "the Ukraine girls really knock me out, etc" is very Beach Boy-ish that's why. I knew it and I think you knew it. But that's why Topix should be always thanking you. Top of the Editors.

I thought it always had a Beach Boys sound to it but still not quite the same.I can see why the Beach Boys enjoyed playing it because it fit in well with their style.I once saw Ringo set in With the Beach boys and the did back in the USSR it was cool.Paul always liked God Only knows by Brian Wilson and Pet sounds was a piece of great work just like Sargent Peppers was.

Pet sounds is classic. To speak of the truth I have in me however, I would like to say this:The Beatles moved two steps ahead with "Pepper" or whatever the other bands did. The sounds the Beach Boys created, Beatles made some...more. The melodies the Beach Boys created, the Beatles made their own with more sophisticated lyrics, if you know what I mean. But, I give the Beach Boys something they deserve the most:Their harmonies were unique.

Yea they became good friends during the visit to Maharishi. Both bands dug each other and traded ideas.Too bad Brian wasn't with them during those times him and Paul could write together and come up with some good tunes I'm sure.

Hi awc, Greg and Bubba.

I agree with all you. It's always been known that the Beach Boys sound influenced “Back in the USSR”. But I think Mike Love is trying to take to much credit for it. It's a great song in concert. I was in Moscow in May of 03 when Paul sang it twice to the crowd in Red Square. I thought he got a little choked up the first time through. It is my ritual that every time I’ve walked off the plane into Sheremet’evo II,(10 times) I’m playing “Back in the USSR” on my CD player or since 07 my IPOD. The head entertainment translator in Moscow pointed out to me that I had covered all the bases in “Back in the USSR”. My first girlfriend there was Gruzin (Georgian), second one a Moskvich (Muscovite), and 3rd one was Ukrainetc (Ukrainian). And boys can I say, there’s nothing like Russian girls!

Hello Jon,

I'm looking forward to hearing it on August 19th, I hope some Russian girls are in my section, nothing like a smoothe "White Russian" before bed.
