I thought Esperanza Spalding winning Best New Artist was surprising, but she definitely deserves it. She is a jazz phenomenon, her voice is silky smooth, and her Upright Bass playing is incredible. Justin Bieber is usually pretty solid in his live performances, but the duet with Usher really limited him. Many people were upset that he didn't win the award (like he hasn't already gotten enough praise), but the award is BEST NEW ARTIST, not MOST POPULAR NEW ARTIST. I think the Grammy's did a good job of trying to promote the less mainstream bands and artist which is good, because a lot of Mainstream music these days is horrible, autotuned garbage.
